48Section 5Changing the Text Input ModeWhen using your phone, you will often need to enter text, such as when storing a name in Phonebook, creating yourpersonal greeting or scheduling events on your calendar. You can enter alphanumeric characters by using yourphone’s keypad.Your phone has the following text input modes:• ABC mode: this mode allows you to enter letters by pressingthe key labeled with the letter you want. Press the key once, twice, three, or four times until it displays.• T9 mode: this mode allows you to enter words with only onekeystroke per letter. Each key on the keypad has more than oneletter; for example, pressing the 5 key can enter J, K, or L.However, the T9 mode automatically compares the series ofkeystrokes you make with an internal linguistic dictionary todetermine the most likely word, thus requiring far fewerkeystrokes than the traditional ABC mode.• Number mode: this mode allows you to enter numbers.• Symbol mode: this mode allows you to enter symbols, such aspunctuation marks. When you are in a field that allows characters to beentered, you will notice the text input mode indicator onthe display.Example: Writing a text message.
