Content providers use atechnology called Digital Rights Management(DRM), to encrypt the files. During theencryption process, the content provider createsa licence which specifies how and when the filecan be used.For example, a content provider could create alicence that allows you to play a certain file onyour computer, but not on your phone. Or, alicence that allows you to play a certain file onyour phone, but only for a month, or perhapsonly a certain number of times.
