42 Basic operationAbout emergency operationIn an emergency you may be able to summon help bysending an emergency call. After making the call, your radiomay be programmed to enter emergency mode. Whileemergency mode is active, your radio may cycle betweenreceive and transmit, so that your dispatcher or the calledparty can hear any activity near your radio.On most networks, an emergency call takes precedence overother call types, and existing calls are cleared down so thatthe emergency call can proceed. To make an emergency callfrom your radio, you may be able to either:■ use a function key programmed for emergency mode, or■ make a preset emergency call. See "Making a preset call"on page 34.Activating emergency modeYou can activate emergency mode using a function keyprogrammed for emergency mode. Alternatively, you may beable to activate emergency mode using a hidden switch orpanic button. Once emergency mode is activated, your radiomakes an emergency call to your dispatcher or some otherpredetermined location. The radio then entersemergency mode.While emergency mode is active, your radio may cyclebetween receive and transmit, so that your dispatcher canhear any activity near the radio.Cancelling emergency modeReset the radio to normal operation at any time by turningthe radio off and then on.Emergency mode may be programmed to end after a fixedperiod of time. In this case, there is no need to turn the radiooff and then on in order to return the radio to normaloperation.
