TASCAM DP-008EX 7512 – Exchanging Data with a ComputerBy connecting this unit with a computer using theincluded USB cable you can backup song data on thisunit’s SD card to the computer and restore backed-upsong data from the computer. Moreover, you canexport track files and stereo master files from a songto a computer and import audio files on the computerto the unit.Backed-up data can be restored to a differentDP-008EX unit than the one that created it. In thisway, files can be freely exchanged between DP-008EXunits, making it easy to add additional recordings ormix existing recordings in a different location.CAUTIONInstead of using the USB connection, if you wantto remove an SD card from this unit and back-upits data by connecting it directly to a computer (orusing a card reader), always turn the unit’s poweroff (put in standby) before removing the card.NOTE• The MTR partitions where song files are storedcannot be directly accessed from a computer.• In this chapter, “computer” refers to a Windows orMacintosh computer connected to this unit. (See“Supported operating systems” on page 75.)The following types of data can be transferred fromthis unit to a computer.8 Entire songsYou can transfer the data for an entire song fromthe unit’s BACKUP directory on the FAT partitionto a computer. This operation is called “backup.”In addition, data backed-up on a computer canbe transferred to the BACKUP directory on theFAT partition, and then restored as song data. Thisoperation is called “restore.”8 WAV format tracksYou can convert tracks to WAV files and export themto a computer. You can also import WAV files from acomputer.These WAV files are stored on the WAVE directory ofthis unit’s FAT partition.8 Stereo master filesStereo master files can be transferred as stereo WAVfiles from the WAVE directory on the FAT partition ofthis unit to a computer.Only export is possible.Supported operating systemsYou can connect this unit to computers with thefollowing operating systems.8 WindowsWindows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 78 Mac OS XMac OS X 10.2 or laterWhen this unit is connected to a computer, thecomputer recognizes it as a removable disk. There isno need for a special driver.NOTEData transfer between this unit and a computeroccurs at USB 2.0 speed (maximum). Data canstill be transferred if the computer connection isUSB1.1, but it will be slower. In addition, to assureUSB 2.0 speed, use the included cable or a cablethat meets USB 2.0 standards.Connecting with a computerTo use the FAT partition of this unit, the unit must beconnected to a computer by USB. When connectedby USB, this unit’s record, playback and other recorderoperations cannot be used.To connect with a computer, connect the USB port onthe right side panel of the unit with a USB port on thecomputer using the included USB cable. It does notmatter whether you turn the unit’s power ON beforeor after the USB connection is made.If the USB connection is made while this unit’s poweris ON, the currently loaded song is saved before theUSB connection becomes active and the followingscreen appears on the display.If you turn the unit’s power ON after making the USBconnection, the screen above appears right away.The unit appears as an external drive named“DP-008EX” on the computer’s display.Click the “DP-008EX” drive on the computer to viewthe “BACKUP”, “WAVE “ and “UTILITY” folders in the FATpartition of the DP-008EX.
