41Servicing 7Instructions for installation and servicing ecoMAX 417. Servicing7.1 Inspection and servicingTo ensure the continued safe and efficient operation ofthe boiler it is recommended that it is checked and ser-viced as necessary at regular intervals. The frequency ofservicing will depend upon the particular installationconditions and usage, but in general the boiler should beinspected once per year and serviced every second year.We therefore recommend that a service contract betaken out for the boiler. It is law that all servicing work iscarried out by a competent person (CORGI registered). For safety reasons only genuine Vaillant spare partsshould be used when servicing the boiler.ImportantFailure to carry out work in accordance withthese instructions could result in personalinjury or damage to the property7.2 Initial inspectionEvery year the boiler should be inspected to check itsgeneral condition. This inspection should include the boi-ler, flue, pipework and electrical connections for anyindications of damage or deterioration. A gas rate checkof the boiler and a visual inspection of the combustionshould also be carried out.Every second year the compact thermal module shouldbe removed and the burner and heat exchanger cleaned. All inspection and servicing work should be performed inthe order as per Table 7.1No Description Inspection Service1 Carry out functional check of boiler X X2 Remove the compact thermal module X3 Clean primary heat exchanger X4 Clean burner X5 Refit compact thermal module, replace burner seals(Spare part number 98 1046) X6 Check general condition ofboiler and clean as necessary X X7 Check electrical plugs and connections X X8 Check/re-pressurise expansionvessel as necessary X9 Check and clean condensate trapand connection pipes X X10 Check ignition and burner flame picture X X11 Check boiler for any leaks X X12 Check air/gas flue system X X13 Complete benchmark logbook X XTable 7.1Note:The boiler is fitted with a combustion analysistest point. A suitable combustion analyser canbe connected to this point to establish the com-bustion performance of the boiler. It is not necessary to check the CO2 content oradjust the air ratio of the boiler during inspec-tion or annual service. This value requires checking and adjusting onlyin the following instances: replacement of gasvalve, conversion to or from Natural Gas/ LPGor if incorrect combustion is suspected.ImportantBefore starting any maintenance work:• Isolate the mains electricity supply by disconnectingthe plug at the socket outlet (if there is only an isola-ting switch remove the fuse from the switch).• Turn OFF the gas supply at the gas service valve fittedto the boiler.• When removing any water carrying components ensurethat water is kept away from all electrical components.• Always use new seals and O–rings when replacing parts.• Always test for gas soundness and always carry outfunctional checks after any service work and afterexchanging any gas carrying component.• Always check earth continuity, polarity and resistanceto earth with a multimeter after any service work andafter exchanging any electrical component. Before commencing any servicing or maintenance work, carry out an initial inspection of the system as follows:• Inspect the flue, pipework and electrical connectionsfor indications of damage or deterioration.• Inspect the air supply and ventilation arrangements ofthe installation.• Check the heating and water system, in particular thecondition of radiator valves, evidence of leakage fromthe heating system and dripping hot water taps.7.2.1 Removing the compact thermal moduleTurn off the boiler• Isolate the electrical supply to the boiler.• Remove boiler bottom cover by releasing the twospring retaining lugs and lowering the rear of the bot-tom cover.• Gently pull the bottom cover backwards to removefrom the appliance. Turn off the gas service valve.• Turn off the boiler CH service valves.• Loosen case retaining screw and release the front casespring retaining clips located beneath the front edgeof the appliance.• Remove the front casing by easing forward the bottomedge and gently lifting.• Lower electronic control box.
