B onnet release leverManual trans miss ion:Reverse: With the vehiclestat ionar y, depress the clut ch peda l,press the release button on theselector lever and eng age the gear.If the gear d oes not engag e, set thelever to neutral, release the clutchpedal and depress aga in; thenrepeat g ear selection.Do not grind the clutchunnecessa rily.When operating, depress clutchpedal fully. Do not use the pedal a sa foot rest.Automatic transmission:P = ParkR = ReverseN = NeutralD = DriveThe selector lever ca n only b emoved out of P when the ignition ison and the bra ke p ed al is applied.To enga ge P or R, push the relea sebutton on the selector lever.Automatic transmission,Manual mode:Move selector lever from D to theleft.+ = Higher gear- = Lower gearIf a higher gear is selected whenvehicle speed is too low, or a lowergear w hen vehicle speed is toohigh, the shift is not executed. Thisca n cause a messag e in the DriverInforma tion Center (DIC).Starting the engine: Turn key to p osition 1 Move steering wheel slightly torelease steering wheel lock Manua l transmission in neutra lwith clutch depressed Automatic transmission in P or Nwith brake pedal depressed Do not a ccelerate Diesel eng ines: turn key top osition 2 for preheating a ndwa it for ! to exting uish Turn key to p osition 3 a ndreleaseStop-Start system:When conditions a llow, the systemswitches off the engine to save fueland reduce emission levels if thevehicle is a t a low speed or at astand still, e.g . at traffic lig hts or in atraffic jam. It starts the engine a ssoon as the clutch is d epressed.To activate an Autostop : Depress clutch ped al Shift selector lever to neutral R elease the clutch pedalThe needle points to AUTO STOP inthe tachometer. To restart engine,depress clutch aga in.Dea ctivate Stop-Start systemmanually by p ressing the ecobutton on the instrument p anel.Manual parking brake:Always ap ply firmly withoutopera ting release button a ndap ply as firmly as possible on uphillor d ownhill slopes.To relea se, pull lever up slightly,press release button and lowerlever fully.To reduce the opera ting forces,depress the foot brake at the sametime.Opening the bonnet:Pull release lever below instrumentpanel on driver’s side and return itto its original p osition.Push safety catch to the right a ndopen the bonnet.Electrical parking brake:Pull switch J, parking bra keoperates automatically withadequate force. For ma ximumforce, e.g. w hen parking withtra iler attached or on inclines, pullswitch J tw ice.The pa rking brake can always beactivated, even if the ignition is off.Before leaving the vehicle, checkparking b rake status.To relea se, switch on ignition, keepbrake p ed al depressed and p ushswitch J.Drive away functionDepressing clutch p ed al orenga ging d rive gear (a utomatictra nsmission) and then dep ressingthe accelerator pedal releaseselectrical p arking brake.Unlocking and opening thetailgate:Press button c on the remotecontrol with the ignition off tounlock the ta ilgate.To open the tailga te, p ush thetouchpad sw itch below the ta ilgatehandle.Refuelling:Before refuelling, switch off engineand any external heaters withcombustion cha mbers (identifiedby sticker on fuel filler flap ).Switch off mobile phones.Fuel filler flap is located at rightrear side of vehicle.The fuel filler flap ca n only beopened if the vehicle is unlocked.Push fla p by hand to release.The filler cap ca n be retained in thebracket on the filler fla p.Wipe off a ny overflowing fuelimmed iately.Petrol engines - use unleaded fuelthat comp lies with DIN EN 228.Diesel engines - use diesel fuelmeeting specifications ofDIN EN 590.Fuel ta nk ca pacity - 56 litres.A13DTE diesel eng ine withStop-Start system, reducedcapacity - 46 litres.Engine oil:In vehicles fitted with engine oillevel monitoring, the engine oil levelis checked automatically a nd avehicle messa ge (Code 79)appears in the Driver InformationCenter (DIC) to warn that theengine oil needs top ping upimmediately.However, check engine oil levelmanually every 300 miles or p rior tolong journeys, to prevent damag eto the eng ine.Check with vehicle on a levelsurface. Engine must be atoperating tempera ture andswitched off for at lea st 5 minutes.Pull out dipstick, wipe clean, insertto stop on the ha nd le, pull out andread engine oil level.Insert dip stick to stop on handleand make half a turn.Caution:It is the owner’s responsib ility tomaintain the correct level of anappropriate quality oil in theengine.Vehicle securityTyre pressure:Check tyre pressures, includ ing the spa re, every 14 d ays and p rior to any long journey; tyres should b echecked when cold.
