Maintenance Instructions LUBRICATION/CLEANING45Elbow Screw LockingNut DownReinstall Transaxle Elbows7. Reinstall the elbows. When the elbow begins tobe snug, position the elbow as it was when re-moved and tighten the locknut. Reinstall reser-voir hoses to elbows.8. Fill reservoir to 1/4-1/2 in. (6-13 mm) with20W-50 (API Service Class SL or higher) oil.9. Start and drive the unit for 1 - 2 minutes.10. If the transaxle sounds noisy or has poor steer-ing response, there may be air trapped in thetransaxle. Follow purge instructions below.11. If oil needs to be added refer back to steps 5-10.12. To purge air from transaxle, raise unit and blockwith tires off the ground. With engine running, slowly move Forward Speed Control forwardand backward 5 to 6 times. Turn off engine andcheck oil level and add if needed. Repeat pro-cedure until transaxle operate at normal noiselevels and move smoothly in forward and re-verse.Mower Deck Spindle LubricationFor belt driven decks, lubricate each deck spindlegrease fitting every 25 hours. Use SAE generalpurpose lithium or molybdenum base grease forgrease fittings.Transaxle Lubrication• The transaxle oil lubrication is SAE 20W-50 (APIService Class SL or higher) engine oil.• Inspect both transaxle cases and hoses after ev-ery 25 hours of operation for visible leaks.• The fluid level of each transaxle can be checkedvisually by looking at the fluid level in the expansionreservoir. When the transaxles are cold, the fluidlevel in the expansion reservoir should be between1/4 in. and 1/2 in. (0.64 cm and 1.27 cm).Reservoir CapCold LevelExpansion Reservoir LocationCLEANINGCAUTIONIf a pressure washer is used on the ex-posed working parts, avoid water on theelectrical parts and the engine cooling sys-tem.Engine Air Cooling SystemTo prevent engine overheating and possible enginedamage, clean grass clippings, chaff and dirt fromthe rotating engine air intake screen every 8 hoursof operation. In certain mowing conditions (drygrass, leaves, tree “cotton”, etc.) it may be neces-sary to check and clean this area several times eachday to prevent engine overheating. Also, visuallycheck inside cylinder head shroud and between cyl-inder head fins for material packed in this area whichwould prevent cooling airflow; remove shroud andclean as required.
