Maintenance Instructions LUBRICATION48Mower Deck Gearbox LubricationThe mower deck gearboxes (tee gearbox and bladedrive gearboxes) are connected as a unitized as-sembly, and oil flows freely between them. The gear-boxes are permanently lubricated (oil filled) andsealed requiring no scheduled lubrication. Howev-er, the gearbox oil seals should be checked every25 hours for indication of an oil leak; particularlythe lower seals on the blade drive gearboxesshould be inspected, since they operate in a dirtyen vironment. If an oil leak is noted, replace the oilseal and relubricate the gearbox assembly asfollows:1. Remove gearbox cover (footrest). Deck orien-tation should be the normal operating position.TeeGearboxBlade DriveGearboxesMower Deck Gearboxes(Shown with Gearbox CoverRemoved for Clarity)2. Clean the area around the individual gearboxcover plates to prevent contaminants from en-tering the gearcase.3. Remove the screws securing the cover plateson the blade drive gearboxes.4. Check the level of lubricant in the gearboxes. Ifthe lubricant is low, add SAE E.P. (ExtremePressure) 80W-90 (API GL-5) gear lube untilthe oil level is up to (submerges) the horizontalshaft in the gearbox (shaft parallel to coverplate).NOTE: In case the gearboxes are completelydrained of oil, approximately 5 fl. oz. (15 cl) of oilper gearbox is required to refill the gear driveassembly.NOTE: Since the gearboxes are connected asa unit by connector tubes, it is necessary to addoil slowly. Allow a few minutes after adding oilfor the oil to flow throughout the assembly andthe oil level to stabilize before reassembly.IMPORTANT: DO NOT overfill the deck gear-boxes. The gearbox assembly is not vented, and overfilling with oil will cause excessive pres-sure and result in oil leaks.5. Check condition of the cover gasket and replaceif worn or damaged. Reinstall gearbox coverplates; torque screws to 24 lb·in (3 N·m).Tractor PTO Gearbox LubricationThe tractor PTO gearbox is permanently lubricated(oil filled) and sealed requiring no scheduled lubrica-tion. However, the gearbox oil seals should bechecked every 25 hours for indication of oil leaks. Ifevidence of an oil leak is noted, replace the oil sealand relubricate the gearbox. The gearbox will need tobe removed from the tractor to be serviced. Refill withSAE E.P. (Extreme Pressure) 80W-90 (API GL-5)gear lube until level is up to (submerges) horizontalshaft of gearbox (shaft parallel to cover). DO NOToverfill.NOTE: In case the gearbox is completely drainedof oil, approximately 5 fl. oz. (15 cl) of oil is requiredto refill the gearbox.PTOGearboxTractor PTO Gearbox
