XEROX DOCUPRINT NETWORK PRINTER SERIES INSTALLATION PLANNING GUIDE FOR MODELS 4050/4090 NPS 1-11. 1Product overviewThis chapter provides an overview of the features and functions ofthe Xerox DocuPrint 4050 NPS and the 4090 NPS.System overviewThe DocuPrint system enables personal computer (PC), SunWorkstation, DEC workstation, HP/Apollo, IBM RS/6000, and AppleMacintosh users to print PostScript level 2, HP PCL5e, or ASCIIdocuments on a high-speed Xerox DocuPrint Model 4050 or 4090NPS printer.One or more of the following network communication systems maybe used to transport documents from the client workstation to theprinter:• Ethernet local area network (LAN) running TransmissionControl Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), AppleTalk, orNovell NetWare network protocol software.• Token Ring running TCP/IP, Novell, or AppleTalk networkprotocol software.• Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) running TCP/IP, Novell3.x, or Apple Talk network protocols. The FDDI supports aSingle Connection configuration only.Multiple network devices may be installed on the same NPScontroller. The default network device that ships with your NPScontroller is a 100 Mbit Ethernet connection. You may install othernetwork devices by installing additional network cards, provided eachcard has a unique network to which it connects. For example, if youuse a Token Ring network connection, you have the option of usingthe default Ethernet device as a secondary network.If you choose to install multiple network devices on your NPScontroller, the following parameters apply:• You must select a primary network device and designate anyothers as secondary. The primary network device does nothave to be the default Ethernet device that ships with yourcontroller; it can be any of the network devices installed.• You must run the TCP/IP protocol on the primary networkdevice. You may also run TCP/IP on other network devices. Foreach network device running TCP/IP, you must specify a uniqueIP address and IP netmask. For the primary network device,you must specify the HostName and router IP address. TheHostName for any secondary devices is created from the namechosen for the primary device.
