Xerox Document Centre Reference Guide Page 12 - 2912. ReferenceDocument Centre Document Security NoteThe following discussion summarizes how remote and local servicetools interact with the Document Centre 460/470, 255/265 and 240DC/ST as well as the state of customer image data when the job iscomplete.ServiceThe Document Centre can be accessed locally through a PortableService Workstation (PWS) or remotely through the optional SixthSense feature using a standard telephone line. Both tools aredesigned for the same purpose, to assist with the service of themachine. The Sixth Sense feature allows Xerox Service Personnelto diagnose problems the customer is having with the machine toeither fix the machine during a session or prepare for a service call. The capabilities of the PWS and Sixth Sense are similar: runningdiagnostic programs, collecting fault information, and reading andmodifying control parameters. These tools do not provide access to any customer image data. Thereis no connection to where the data exists in the system from eitherthe PWS or Sixth Sense. The sole interaction with the printingfunction for service personnel is the ability to request the system toprint internally-generated test patterns.Customer Job Life (Images)For a copy job, as a customer job is scanned, the information isstored in RAM (random access memory) and is transferred to theimage disk, an internal hard disk drive. The image information onthe image disk is virtually encrypted because it is compressed witha non-standard format and is stored with non-deterministic locationand size. The machine knows where the data resides because a seriesof ‘pointers’ contained in RAM identifies the location andcompressed size of each image. Whenever a job is completed, orwhenever power is turned off, the information in RAM is cleared, resulting in the inability for the machine to ever access the dataagain. Subsequent images will overwrite the compressed data onRAM and on the image disk. This means that no one else has theability to print your job on either the present 470/460/265/255/240Digital Copier or any other one.
