74 FT-857 Operating ManualMEMORY OPERATION ON “REGULAR” MEMORY CHANNELSMost Memory operation will be conducted in the “regular” memory registers. There are 200memory channels available for storage and recall of important frequencies.Normal Memory Storage1. Tune in the desired frequency, and set the operating mode and bandwidth. If this is anFM channel, set up any required CTCSS/DCS and repeater shift configurations. Stan-dard (default) repeater shifts do not require you to utilize the “split” frequency memorytechnique, described later.2. Press the [FUNC] key momentarily, then rotate the SELECT knob, as needed, untilMulti Function Row “b” [MW, SKIP, TAG] appears on the display.3. Press the [A](MW) key momentarily to enter the “Memory Check” mode, which is usedto find an unused memory channel. The Memory Channel Number notation at the upperleft corner of the LCD will blink, and the frequency stored (if any) on the current memorychannel will be shown in the display. Rotate the SELECT knob to select the channelnumber on which you wish to store the current frequency data.4. If you just want to program in the frequency data, press and hold in the [A](MW) key forone second until you hear two beeps, a second apart; the second beep confirms that thefrequency information was successfully stored. If you want to assign an Alpha-NumericTag (label) to this Memory location, see the next step.5. If you wish to assign an Alpha-Numeric Tag to this memory location, do not press andhold in the [A](MW) key in step 4; instead, press it momentarily; the display will nowshow the default Tag for the Memory Channel (“CH-nnn”), and a cursor will be blinkingbelow the “C.” Now follow this procedure;• The blinking cursor indicates that the first character is awaiting assignment of a let-ter, number, or symbol. Rotate the DIAL knob to select the desired first letter in theproposed Tag. Note that both upper and lower case letters are available.• Rotate the SELECT knob one click clockwise to move to the next character posi-tion.• Rotate the DIAL knob to select the desired 2nd character, then rotate the SELECTknob one click clockwise to move on to the next position.• Continue this process until the Tag is complete. Now move quickly to the next step.• When the Tag is complete, press the [A](MW) key momentarily. This will completethe storage of the frequency and Alpha-Numeric label.MEMORY OPERATION
