7-6TurningFor most snow surfaces, “body English” isthe key to turning. As you approach a curve, slow down andbegin to turn the handlebar in the desireddirection. As you do so, put your weight onthe running board to the inside of the turnand lean your upper body into the turn. This procedure should be practiced at lowspeeds many times, in a large flat areawith no obstacles. Once you have learnedthis technique, you should be able to per-form it at higher speeds or in tightercurves. Lean more as the turn getssharper or is made at higher speeds.Improper riding techniques such as abruptthrottle changes, excessive braking, incor-rect body movements, or too much speedfor the sharpness of the turn may causethe snowmobile to tip.If your snowmobile begins to tip while turn-ing, lean more into the turn to regain bal-ance. If necessary, gradually let off on thethrottle or steer to the outside of the turn.Remember:Avoid higher speeds until you are thor-oughly familiar with the operation of yoursnowmobile.Riding uphillYou should practice first on gentle slopes.Try more difficult climbs only after you havedeveloped your skill. As you approach ahill, accelerate before you start the climb, and then reduce the throttle to preventtrack slippage. It is also important to keepyour weight on the uphill side at all times. On climbs straight up the hill, this can beaccomplished by leaning forward and, onsteeper inclines, standing on the runningboards and leaning forward over the han-dlebar. (Also see “Traversing a slope.”)Slow down as you reach the crest of thehill, and be prepared to react to obstacles, sharp drops, or other vehicles or peoplewhich may be on the other side. If you areunable to continue up a hill, do not spin thetrack. Stop the engine and set the parkingbrake. Then pull the rear of the snowmo-bile around to point the snowmobile backdown the hill. When the snowmobile ispointed downhill, mount your snowmobilefrom the uphill side. Restart the engine, release the parking brake, and descendthe hill.WARNING@Side hills and steep slopes are not rec-ommended for a novice snowmobiler.@
