ENGINE OPERATION52 JH Series Operation ManualNOTICERacing the engine: With the gear inNEUTRAL, accelerate from thelow-speed position to the high-speedposition and repeat this process aboutfive times. This is done to clean outcarbon from the cylinders and the fuelinjection valve. Neglecting to race theengine will result in poor smoke colorand reduce engine performance.• If possible, periodically operate theengine at near maximum engine speedwhile underway. This will generatehigher exhaust temperatures, which willhelp clean out hard carbon deposits, maintaining engine performance andprolonging the life of the engine.NOTICENever turn off the battery switch (ifequipped) or short the battery cablesduring operation. Damage to the electricsystem will result.SHUTTING DOWN THEENGINENormal Shutdown1. Reduce engine speed to low idle andput remote control handle in NEUTRAL.2. Accelerate from low speed to highspeed and repeat five times. This willclean out the carbon from the cylindersand the fuel injection nozzles.3. Allow engine to run at low speed(approximately 1000 min -1 ) withoutload for 5 minutes.NOTICEFor maximum engine life, Yanmarrecommends that when shutting theengine down, you allow the engine toidle, without load, for 5 minutes. This willallow the engine components thatoperate at high temperatures, such asthe turbocharger (if equipped) andexhaust system, to cool slightly beforethe engine itself is shut down.Figure 44.
