28SECTION 5: MOWER DECKThis section contains removal, installation, adjust-ment, and maintenance information for the 42-inchmower deck.DECK REMOVALRemove the mower deck from the tractor as follows:1. Move the tractor to a level surface, disengage thePTO, stop the engine, and set the parking brake.2. Move the deck gauge wheels to their highestsetting (lowest deck setting).3. Remove the ‘V’ belt from the PTO pulley, locatedon the bottom of the engine, using one of thefollowing two methods.Releasing belt tension with the idler pulley.• Using the deck lift handle, raise the deck to theupper position that allows for the most horizontalrun of the belt between the deck idler pulleys andthe PTO pulley on the bottom of the engine.• Working from the middle of the tractor, pivot theidler bracket and movable idler pulley rearwardaway from the backside of the ‘V" belt just farenough to lift the belt up and over the idler pulley.See Figure 28.Figure 28WARNING: The muffler at the rear of thetractor may be extremely hot, and couldcause serious burns. Use extremecaution when near the muffler, or allowthe muffler to fully cool before removingthe belt.• From beneath the rear of the tractor, slide the beltoff of the PTO pulley on the bottom of the engine.Rolling the belt off the PTO pulley.• Using the deck lift handle, raise the deck to theupper position that allows for the most horizontalrun of the belt between the deck idler pulleys andthe PTO pulley on the bottom of the engine.WARNING: The muffler at the rear of thetractor may be extremely hot, and couldcause serious burns. Use extremecaution when near the muffler, or allowthe muffler to fully cool before removingthe belt.• Sitting behind the tractor facing forward, reachbeneath the tractor to grasp the belt at the front ofthe PTO pulley.WARNING: Use caution to preventpinching your fingers when rolling thebelt off the PTO pulley.• Pull the left side of the belt rearward and down-ward while manually turning the PTO pulley to theright until the belt rides out onto the edge of thelower sheave of the pulley. NOTE: If pulling theright side of the belt, turn the pulley to the left.• While still holding the belt downward, continueturning the PTO pulley until the belt is rolled offthe pulley.4. Lower the deck to the ground using the deck lifthandle.5. Locate the LH and RH deck support pins on eachside of the deck. Pull the deck support pinsoutward and lock in the disengaged position torelease the deck from the tractor’s LH and RHdeck lift arms. See Figure 29.Figure 296.
