10If you close the lid of theappliance while any of thehotplate burners are lit, the gaswill go out. This is because itwould be dangerous if theburners stayed on when the lidwas closed.Always use the control knob toturn off a burner. Do not use thelid as a cut-off device. This willonly cut off the gas when the lidis closed. The gas will flowagain when the lid is opened.To turn off any burner1. Turn the control knob to the off position.This is shown by a large dot.When lighting any burner, ensurethat it is lit before you leave theappliance.When turning off a burner, ensurethe flame has gone out beforeleaving the appliance.In the event of the burner flamesbeing accidentally extinguished,turn off the burner control and donot attempt to re-ignite the burnerfor at least 1 min.Things to noteIf you are having any difficulty lighting a hobburner turn all the hob controls off and makesure the burner parts have been replacedcorrectly.Hints and tips• Do not overfill pans or they will boilover.• Do not use pans with very heavyhandles which cause the pan to tip.• The hob surface should be allowed tocool before closing the lid.Do not use the lid as a worksurface or chopping board. Thiscould damage the glass andreduce its strength.Place pans on the centre of theburners.Position pans so the handlescannot be accidentally knocked oroverhang the appliance.Lift pans on and off the pansupports.Do not slide them across the hob.• Any spillage should be removed fromthe lid before opening.• Do not leave accidental spillage onthe hob or removable parts. Thespillage should be wiped up and theparts washed and carefully dried assoon as the hob, pan supports andburner parts are cool enough to touch.• A flat based Wok will stand stable onthe pan supports. If you use a roundWok with a collar support, the collarmust be the open wirework typeotherwise the performance of theburner will be affected.Take care to avoid burns andscalds when reaching acrossthe hotplate.Take extra care when deep fatfrying, do not cover the pan witha lid. Do not leave a panunattended. If the pan catchesfire, leave it where it is and turnoff all controls. Place a dampcloth or a fitting lid over the panto smother the flames. Neverput water on the fire. Leave tocool for 30 minutes.
