56 CHAPTER 4: C ONFIGURING THE S WITCH1000 Mbps connections are always full-duplex.Half-duplex connections are only available for10 Mbps and 100 Mbps settings.CAUTION: Before manually setting a port tofull-duplex, verify that the device connected tothe port is also manually set to the same speedand duplex setting. If connecting link partnersare left to autonegotiate for a link manually seton this switch to full-duplex, they will alwaysnegotiate to half-duplex, resulting in a duplexmismatch. This can result in a significantreduction in network performance. If you areunsure of how to configure the speed/duplexsetting, simply enable autonegotiation for theport. You cannot modify the speed/duplex settingsof ports that are members of a trunk oraggregated link.Supported SFP transceivers only operate at1000 Mbps full-duplex. Inserting an SFPtransceiver into a gigabit port disables thecorresponding RJ-45 port, even if no fiber cableis inserted.Link AggregationLink aggregation, also called “trunking”, refersto bonding multiple ports into a single group toeffectively combine the bandwidth into a singleconnection or a “trunk”. If you are connectingthe Switch to another switch or to an Internetbackbone, you can aggregate links on theSwitch to increase throughput and preventpacket loopback between switches. For link aggregation to work, the trunks mustbe configured on both ends (switches).Guidelines for Creating Trunks■ Any port on the Switch can be used forcreating a trunk.■ This switch supports a maximum of fourtrunks.■ Each trunk may contain up to fourmembers.■ A port may only be a member of one trunkat any one time.
