4 P ERFORMINGTROUBLESHOOTING ANDDIAGNOSTIC TESTSThis chapter explains how to isolate and solve 3C590 PCIadapter problems.Make sure that the adapter is correctly installed. (SeeChapter 2 for installation instructions.)Troubleshooting with the Diagnostic TestsThe three diagnostic tests on the 3C59X EtherDisk diskettecheck the adapter’s overall operation and permit the isolationof faults. You can run the diagnostic tests after installing one ormore 3C590 PCI adapters, or when a fault is suspected. If thetests in their default configuration do not isolate the problem, you can change the test parameters to meet specificsituations.Always run the diagnostic tests with no device drivers ormemory managers installed. Whenever you plan to run thediagnostic tests, you must first boot your computer from aDOS diskette containing no device drivers, or you must exit toDOS if you have an operating system other than DOS. (Referto the section “Accessing DOS” in Chapter 3.)If you are running under DOS 6.x or higher, press [F5] when themessage informs you that MS-DOS is starting. This prevents theCONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files from being loaded intomemory. After running the diagnostic tests, you should rebootyour computer to communicate on the network. The diagnostic tests are divided into three groups, designatedGroup 1, Group 2, and Group 3.Group 1 tests check the physical components and circuitryon the adapter.
