52 CHAPTER 3: S ETTING UP FOR M ANAGEMENTSetting UpCommand LineInterfaceManagement usingSSHThis section describes how you can set up Command Line Interfacemanagement using SSH over a network.To manage a Switch using the command line interface over a networkusing SSH:1 Ensure you have already set up the Switch with IP information asdescribed in “Setting Up Overview” on page 36.2 Check that you have the IP protocol correctly installed on yourmanagement workstation. You can check this by trying to browse theWorld Wide Web. If you can browse, the IP protocol is installed.3 Check you can communicate with the Switch by entering a pingcommand at the DOS prompt in the following format:c:\ ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx(where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the IP address of the Switch)If you get an error message, check that your IP information has beenentered correctly and the Switch is powered up.The switch automatically generates a host key pair when it is powered upfor the first time, or after any reset to factory defaults. Host keygeneration may take a while, during which time SSH connections to theswitch will be refused.4 Install an SSH client application on the workstation you want to use toaccess the switch.3Com recommends the following SSH clients; PuTTY, OpenSSH and SSHCommunications Security Corp Secure Shell.5 Open an SSH session and access the switch using the switch’s IP addressand port number.The first time you connect to the switch the client will ask you to confirmthat the host key is correct for the device.6 The switch and the SSH client will authenticate each other and a secureconnection will be established.7 Enter your usual username and password to access the CLI commands.For increased security please change the default password when usingSSH for the first time.DUA1720-3AAA07.book Page 52 Wednesday, March 17, 2004 1:14 PM
