The main area is remote control and monitoring of the medium voltageoverhead line and underground networks:ï Pole- and pad-mounted switches and disconnectorsï Ring main units (RMU)ï Small transformer kiosksï Other primary and secondary substation automationThe functionality of REC 523 is tied to the hardware configuration.The desiredfunctions can be activated from a wide range of protection, control, measurement,power quality, condition monitoring, general and communication functions withinthe scope of I/O connections, considering the total CPU load. Compared to thetraditional use of separate products, the combination of desired functions providescost-effective solutions and, together with the relay configuration (IEC 61131standard), allows the REC 523 unit to be easily adapted to different kinds ofapplications.Fig. 4.1.-1 Remote Monitoring and Control Unit system based on REC 523By means of a programmable LED display, the control functions of the REC 523unit indicate the status of disconnectors and circuit breakers, faults, alarm limits, andso on. Further REC 523 allows status information to be transmitted to the remotecontrol system. Controllable objects (such as circuit breakers) can be opened andclosed over the remote control system or by using the local automation functions,such as reclosers and sectionalizers.
