Overview 11 Overview1.1 IntroductionThe cPCI-3920 is a highly integrated 3U CompactPCI SBC in sin-gle slot (4HP) or dual slot (8HP) width form factor. It has beendesigned to support Intel® lower power Core™ 2 Duo, Core™Duo and Celeron® M processors in FC-BGA package with a rangeof 1.0GHz to 1.5GHz at FSB 533MHz to 667MHz. They deliveroptimized power-efficient computing and outstanding dual coreperformance with lower power consumption. The cPCI-3920 is based on the server-class Intel® 3100 chipset(Whitmore Lake) which combines Memory Controller Hub and I/OController Hubs into a single component, significantly conservingboard real estate and power consumption. The Intel® 3100chipset is the first Integrated Intel® chipset optimized for embed-ded, communications, and storage applications. The cPCI-3920 supports registered ECC type, single channelDDR2 400MHz soldered onboard memory with a maximumcapacity of up to 2GB. The board supports one 32-bit/33MHzCompactPCI interface acting as system master CPU only. The cPCI-3920 offers versatile I/O ports like two Gigabit Ethernetports, two COM ports, up to three USB 2.0 ports, PS/2 Keyboard/Mouse, and VGA port on the front panel. A Rear Transition Mod-ule (RTM) is also available and provides an additional two USB2.0 ports, two COM ports, and two Gigabit Ethernet ports switchedfrom the front panel.Storage features of the cPCI-3920 include a pin header andmounting space for an onboard USB NAND flash module, and oneSerial ATA interface with mounting space for a 2.5” HDD in the8HP version. There are also three 7-pin Serial ATA interfacesavailable on the RTM for additional storage expansion.Designed for stability and packaged in a rugged format, the cPCI-3920 is suitable for long life applications situated in industrial envi-ronments, including I/O intensive applications where only one slotis available for the CPU. Components which have high tempera-ture tolerance have been selected from embedded technologyprograms, and therefore offer long-term availability.
