64 CHAPTER 6Synthesis ParametersFILT 1 MODE & FILT 2 MODESelects the operating mode of the indicated fil-ter:- LP The low pass filter suppresses frequen-cies higher than the CUTOFF frequency (seeappropriate section) and allows the lower fre-quencies through.- HP The high pass filter works in the oppositemanner of the low pass filter: It suppressesthe lower frequencies in a signal and lets thehigher frequencies pass.- BP The band pass filter suppresses bothends of the tonal spectrum and allows only anarrowly defined bandwidth of the originalsound to pass.- BS The band stop filter, band reject filter ornotch filter works in the opposite manner ofthe bandpass filter. It allows all of the fre-quencies of a signal except for a narrow fre-quency band around the cutoff to pass. Theterm “notch” is fairly descriptive; you mightsay this filter chops a notch out of the soundspectrum.FILT 1 SELECT & FILT 2 SELECTThis control feature is used to allocate the threeknobs RESONANCE, ENV AMOUNT and KEYFOLLOW to the first filter, second filter or bothfilters. The currently active assignments are in-dicated by the integrated LEDs. To control bothfilters simultaneously via the knobs, you mustfirst press both buttons simultaneously. SE-LECT pertains to the corresponding knob locat-ed on the VIRUS only, but not to the soundparameters it controls. These parameters existseparately in both filters regardless of the SE-LECT setting. This is why for instance youshould control the resonances of the respectivefilters via different MIDI Controllers. In actualitySELECT only determines if the knob in questionsends its value to the first filter, second filter orboth filters. FILTER ENVELOPEATTACKDetermines the amount of time it takes for thefilter envelope to rise to its maximum level. Thehigher the ATTACK value, the longer it takes forthe envelope to rise to maximum volume afterthe start of a note.DECAYDetermines the amount of time it takes for thefilter envelope to fade out. The higher the DE-CAY value, the longer it takes for the envelopeto fall from its peak level to the SUSTAIN value.SUSTAINDetermines a variable level for the filter enve-lope at which it remains after the end of the DE-CAY phase (see appropriate section). Theduration of the SUSTAIN phase depends on theTIME value (see appropriate section).RELEASEDetermines the speed or rate at which the vol-ume of the filter envelope decreases after theend of a note. The higher the DECAY value, the
