Chapter 3: Troubleshooting40The modem is noisy when it dials and connectsWhen your modem tries to connect to anothermodem, it beginshandshaking. Handshakingis a digital “getting acquainted” conversationbetween the two modems that establishesconnection speeds and communicationprotocols. You may hear unusual handshakingsounds when the modems first connect. If thehandshaking sounds are too loud, you can turndown the modem volume.To turn down the modem volume:1 Click Start, then click Control Panel.TheControl Panel window opens. Ifyour Control Panel is in CategoryView, click Printers and OtherHardware.2 Click/Double-click the Phone andModem Options icon, then click theModems tab.3 Click the modem you want to adjust,then click Properties.4 Click the Modem tab, then adjust theSpeaker volume control.5 Click OK twice to close thePhone andModem Options dialog box.MonitorThe screen resolution is not correct• Change the screen resolution from theDisplay Settings dialog box.The computer is running but there is no picture• Make sure that the monitor is plugged inand turned on. If the monitor is turnedon, the power LED should be lit.• Adjust the brightness and contrastcontrols to the center position.• Make sure that the monitor cable isconnected to the video port on the backof your computer.• Check the cable for bent or damagedpins.
