UHD S TANDARD D UCT FURNACE INSTALLATION OPERATION AND S ERVICE M ANUAL6 of 55SECTION 3: CRITICAL CONSIDERATIONS3.1 Basic InformationUHD[T][M][X][S][R] heaters have automatic ignitionburners for ON/OFF, HIGH/LOW or modulate withinthe range of HIGH/LOW operation.3.2 Manufactured UnitsGas-fired, power-vented duct furnace with tubularheat exchanger. Units shall have a minimum of 82%thermal efficiency. The standard unit shall consist ofa non-separated combustion design with analuminized heat exchanger and a single stage gasvalve. Design and heat exchanger alternatives shallbe offered as follows:• Separated Combustion: [S] A separatedcombustion unit shall consist of a sealedenclosure with a hinged door. Combustion airinlet on rear of heater allows for intake ventingfrom outside of heated space to be attached.Combustion flue gases shall be ducted fromoutside heated space by ductwork connected tounit's outlet flange.• Stainless Steel Heat Exchanger: [X] A stainlesssteel heat exchanger unit shall consist of heatexchanger tubes, heat exchanger tube supportsand heat exchanger tube plate produced of 409stainless steel. Air inlet temperatures below 40°F (4.4° C) are not recommended for thisapplication.• Two Stage Gas Valve: [T] A two stage gas valveshall allow heater to function in either high or lowoperation.• Modulating Gas Valve: [M] A modulating gasvalve shall allow heater to modulate betweenhigh and low fire.• Approved for Installation Downstream of aRefrigeration System: [R] Installation allows forunit to be installed downstream of a refrigerationsystem. Unit design shall include a 409 stainlesssteel package. Stainless steel package includesheat exchanger, tube supports and drip pan.3.3 Location and SuspensionAll models:• Must be installed indoors.• Must be installed on the positive pressure side ofthe air circulation blower.• Must be installed in a level position withhorizontal discharge.• May be mounted on a shelf of non-combustiblematerial.• May be suspended from above (See Page 10,Section 6.2) or from wall brackets of sufficientstrength to support the heater as listed in theTechnical Data Table on Page 51, Section 16.2and Page 53, Section 16.5.• Drop rods must be a minimum of 3/8" diametermild steel. Four suspension points (3/8" nuts)are located on top of the heater.• Must be installed in a manner which allowsaccess to all serviceable components.3.4 Minimum Required Installation ClearancesClearances around the heater and vent must be asindicated on Page 7, Figure 4 and Page 11, Section7 to ensure access for servicing and correctoperation.3.5 VentilationIt is important to ensure that there is adequate airspace around the heater to supply air forcombustion, ventilation and distribution inaccordance with local and national code on Page11, Section 7.3.6 Gas SupplyIt is important that the gas supply pipe is sizedcorrectly to provide the inlet pressure as stated onthe heater data plate. The gas supply pipe andelectrical connections must not support any of theheater's weight. See Page 18, Section 9.3.7 Electrical SupplyA permanent 120 V / 1 Ø / 60 Hz electrical supply isrequired for the main electrical power. The heateralso requires suitable controls listed on Page 20,Section 10.3.8 VentChoose heater orientation to allow for properlocation of the vent. Each heater must be fitted witha correctly sized sealed vent system. If vented horizontally, no other equipment may beconnected to the vent. See Page 11, Section 7.
