UHD S TANDARD D UCT FURNACE INSTALLATION OPERATION AND S ERVICE M ANUAL18 of 55SECTION 9: GAS PIPINGA gas meter is connected to the service pipe by thegas supply company. An existing meter should bechecked, preferably by the company, to ensure thatthe meter is adequate for the rate of gas supplyrequired.Installation pipes must be fitted in accordance withlocal and national codes. Pipes of smaller size thanthe heater inlet gas connection should not be used.Gas lines must meet applicable codes:United States: Flexible stainless steel gas hose(US models) is certified per the standard forconnectors for gas equipment. ANSI Z21.21/CSA6.10 – latest revision.Canada: Rubber type 1 gas hose (Canadianmodels) is certified as being in compliance with thestandard for elastomeric composite hose and hosecouplings for conducting propane and natural gas,CAN/CGA 8.1 – latest revision.9.1 ConnectionsConnect the heater to the gas supply ensuring thatthe final connections are as follows:• Gas supply pipe work is run in medium or heavygauge tubing in compliance with local andnational codes.• Meter and service must be large enough tohandle all the burners being installed plus anyother connected load. The gas pipe which feedsthe system must be large enough to supply therequired gas with a maximum pressure drop of1/2 in wc. When gas piping is not included in thelayout drawing, contact the local gas supplier.• An isolating valve and union connection shouldbe used and fitted into the supply adjacent to theheater.• A minimum 1/8" NPT plugged tappingaccessible for test connection must be installedimmediately upstream of the gas supplyconnection to the heater.• For suspended heaters, an approved metalflexible connection between the isolating valveand the heater may be used. To reducepressure loss, use one pipe size larger thanthe heater gas connection.IMPORTANT - The complete installation must bepurged and tested for gas soundness in accordancewith local and national codes.Caution: Do not high pressure (in excess of 1/2 psi[14 in wc]) test the gas piping with the burnerconnected. Close manual shut-off valve during anypressure testing equal to or less than 1/2 psi (14 inwc).Check the pipe and tubing ends for leaks beforeplacing heating equipment into service. Whenchecking for gas leaks, use a soap and watersolution; never use an open flame.WARNINGExplosion HazardLeak test all components of gas pipingbefore operation.Gas can leak if piping is not installedproperly.Do not high pressure test gas piping withheater connected.Failure to follow these instructions can resultin death, injury or property damage.Fire HazardConnect gas supply according to Figure 13.Do not use gas supply pipe and electricalconnections to support heater’s weight.Gas can leak if not installed properly.Failure to follow these instructions canresult in death, injury or property damage.
