8 Product Overview ELS100-24TXGRMONRMON (Remote Monitoring) is a facility used to manage networksremotely while providing multi-vendor interoperability between monitoringdevices and management stations. RMON is defined by an SNMP MIB.This MIB is divided into nine different groups, each gathering specificstatistical information or performing a specific function. RMON-capabledevices gather network traffic data and then store them locally untildownloaded to an SNMP management station. The ELS100-24TXG supports four of the nine groups of RMON definedfor Ethernet networks on a per port basis. Specifically, these are:• Statistics: a function that maintains counts of network traffic statisticssuch as number of packets, broadcasts, collisions, errors, anddistribution of packet sizes.• History: a function which collects historical statistics based on user-defined sampling intervals. The statistical information collected is thesame as the Statistics group, except on a time stamped basis.• Alarm: a function that allows managers to set alarm thresholds basedon traffic statistics. Alarms trigger other actions through the Eventgroup.• Event: a function that operates with the Alarm group to define anaction that will be taken when an alarm condition occurs. The eventmay write a log entry and/or send a trap message.RMON Statistics group information is displayed on the Port StatisticsScreen in the console menus. Additional RMON functionality is availablevia SNMP.Port MirroringThe ELS100-24TXG switch includes the ability to mirror the traffic beingswitched on any 10/100 port for purposes of network traffic analysis andconnection integrity. When this feature is enabled, a protocol analyzer orRMON probe is connected to any port in a group of eight. This port isconfigured to mirror the traffic from any other port in the same group ofports. The groupings are ports 1-8, 9-16 and 17-24. You can only mirrorone port to another port at one time. Port mirroring occurs at the samespeed configured for the port (10Mbps-to-10Mbps or 100Mbps-to-100Mbps). Port mirroring is configurable in the Switch ConfigurationMenu using the console menus or via SNMP.Auto-negotiationAuto-negotiation is a process that permits the switch to automaticallyselect the operational mode of its ports. For 10/100 ports, the switchautomatically detects and selects the speed (10Mbps or 100Mbps) andduplex mode (full duplex or half duplex) of a port upon being connectedto the network. For Gigabit Ethernet ports, the switch automaticallydetects and selects the flow control mode of the port. The ports are thenautomatically set by the switch to operate in the proper mode, withoutuser intervention. It is not required that the network device being
