9032947 Product Overview 9connected to the switch supports auto-negotiation as the ELS100-24TXGswitch automatically adjusts to the network device's communicationsettings. Auto-negotiation is configurable in the Port Configuration Menuof the console menus or via SNMP.Broadcast ThrottlingThe ELS100-24TXG has the capability to throttle (or limit) the flooding ofpackets through the switch. Broadcast, multicast, and unknowndestination address unicast packets received by the switch are typicallyflooded to all ports on the switch or on a given VLAN. When the numberof these types of packets being forwarded is large, the performance of theswitch in forwarding packets of other types may suffer. A programmablebroadcast cutoff rate parameter allows a rate threshold to be set in theswitch for the forwarding of broadcast and unknown destination addresspackets. If the cutoff rate is exceeded, further packets of these types aredropped. This capability helps to alleviate broadcast storms, a problemoften encountered in Ethernet networks. Broadcast throttling isconfigurable in the Switch Configuration menu of the console menus orvia SNMP.BootP/DHCPThe Bootstrap Protocol (BootP) and the Dynamic Host ConfigurationProtocol (DHCP) provide for the capability of passing configurationinformation to hosts on a TCP/IP network. Using this process, networkdevices do not need to be configured before they can communicate usingthe TCP/IP protocol suite. The ELS100-24TXG switch uses BootP andDHCP to automatically configure IP address information without requiringaccess to the console menus. BootP/DHCP operation is configurableusing the BootP/DHCP Enable option in the System Configuration Menuof the console menus or via SNMP.LEDsThe switch port LEDs provide a quick and accurate display of the integrityof switch connections and port mode. The default operation of the 10/100LEDs indicates Link (L) and Activity (A) for each of the ports. Theoperation of these LEDs can be changed by use of the LED mode buttonon the switch front panel. When the LED mode button is pressed (pressedand held in), the operation of the 10/100 LEDs changes to indicate 10/100Mbps speed and full/half duplex operation, respectively. The GigabitEthernet port LEDs indicate Link (L) and Activity (A) for each of the ports. The Gigabit Ethernet port LEDs are not affected by the LED mode button.Full Duplex ModeThe full duplex mode of operation on a port can double the throughput ofswitch connections. This mode disables the collision detection portion ofthe Ethernet Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection
