7OPERATING YOUR WASHERTo obtain the best washing results, you must operate your washing machine properly.This section gives you this important information.• Close zippers, snaps, and hooks to avoidsnagging other items.Remove pins, buckles, and other hardobjects to avoid scratching the washingmachine interior.• Empty pockets and turn them inside out.• Turn down cuffs and turn synthetic knitsout to avoid pilling.• Tie strings and sashes so they will nottangle.• Treat spots and stains.(see "Removing stains" on page14)Preparing clothes for washing• Separate heavily soiled items from, lightly soiled ones, even if they would normally bewashed together.• Separate dark colors from light colors, colorfast items from non-colorfast item.Sorting• Drop items into washing machine loosely.Items should move easily through washwater for best cleaning and wrinkle-freeresults.• Load washing machine properly andselect correct load size setting.Overloading and selecting a setting toosmall for the wash load can:- cause poor cleaning- increase wrinkling- create excessive lint- wear out items faster (because of pilling)• Mix large and small items in each load.Load evenly to maintain washing machinebalance. An off balance load can make thewashing machine vibrate during spin.• Reduce wash time when using a smallload size setting. Loads with only a fewsmall items need less wash time.• Use a large load size setting to reducewrinkling with permanent press clothesand some synthetic knits.
