Programmable ThermostatsInstallation, Start-Up, and Operating InstructionsNOTE: Read the entire instruction manual before starting theinstallation.SAFETY CONSIDERATIONSRead and follow manufacturer instructions carefully. Follow alllocal electrical codes during installation. All wiring must conformto local and national electrical codes. Improper wiring or installa-tion may damage thermostat.Recognize safety information. This is the safety-alert symbol .When you see this symbol on the equipment and in the instructionmanual, be alert to the potential for personal injury.Understand the signal words DANGER, WARNING, and CAU-TION. These words are used with the safety-alert symbol. DAN-GER identifies the most serious hazards which will result in severepersonal injury or death. WARNING signifies a hazard whichcould result in personal injury or death. CAUTION is used toidentify unsafe practices which would result in minor personalinjury or product and property damage.INTRODUCTIONCarrier’s 7-day programmable thermostats are wall-mounted, low-voltage thermostats which maintain room temperature by control-ling the operation of a heating and air conditioning system. All ofthe thermostats allow up to 4 time/temperature settings to beprogrammed per 24 hr period and store programs for 7 indepen-dent days. Batteries are not required; during a power interruption, the internal memory stores programs for an unlimited time and theclock continues to run for at least 72 hrs.INSTALLATION CONSIDERATIONSPowerNote that all TSTAT models have no batteries and are not ″powerstealing″. They do require 24VAC (R and C terminals) to beconnected for proper operation. Thermostat will not operatewithout these 2 connections.ModelsThere are 3 different models. The last 2 letters of the part numberindicate the model. These 2 letters appear on the package and onthe circuit board. Be sure to have the proper thermostat for theintended application. Models are:AC - 1-stage cool, 1-stage heat - for AC systems only.HP - 1-stage cool, 2-stage heat - for either HP or AC with 2-stageheat.2S - 2-stage cool, 2-stage heat - for 2-speed AC systems, or2-stage cool, 3-stage heat - for 2-speed HP systems, or1-stage cool, 4-stage heat - for 1-speed HP with special3-stage electric heat.Use each only for its intended purpose. (See Table 1.)INSTALLATIONStep 1—Thermostat LocationThermostat should be mounted:• Approximately 5 ft (1.5m) from floor.• Close to or in a frequently used room, preferably on an insidepartitioning wall.• On a section of wall without pipes or duct work.Thermostat should NOT be mounted:• Close to a window, on an outside wall, or next to a door leadingto the outside.• Exposed to direct light and heat from a lamp, sun, fireplace, orother temperature-radiating object which may cause a falsereading.• Close to or in direct airflow from supply registers and return-airgrilles.• In areas with poor air circulation, such as behind a door or inan alcove.Step 2—Set Dip SwitchesThere are 4 dip switches on the back of the circuit board whichmust be set depending on the application. Check each switch forcorrect position.Switch A - Zoning Select (Active on all models)Set switch A to ON for zoning, OFF for non-zoned installations.Do not set switch A to ON in a non-zoning application, asequipment will cycle excessively. When switch A is set to OFF,equipment is limited to 4 cycles per hr and a 5-minute timeguardprotects the compressor.Switch B - Setback Recovery (Active on all models)Set switch B to ON for normal recovery, OFF for smart recovery.Normal recovery adjusts the desired temperature at the pro-grammed time. Smart recovery, which is active in heating modeonly, starts earlier and adjusts the desired temperature slowly sothat room temperature will arrive at the programmed temperatureat the programmed time.Switch C - HP/AC Select (Active on HP and 2S models only)Set switch C to ON for AC only, OFF for HP applications.Fig. 1—Carrier Programmable ThermostatA94134®Manufacturer reserves the right to discontinue, or change at any time, specifications or designs without notice and without incurring obligations.Book 1 4Tab misc. misc.
