Section 4 = Maintenance1S kW Generator MAINTENANCE. Make sure the piston is at Top Dead Center (TDC)of its compression stroke (both valves closed). Toget tlle piston at TDC, remove the intake screen attlle front of the engine to gain access to the flywheelnut. Use a large socket and socket wrench to rotatethe nut and hence tile engtae. While watching thepiston through the spark plug hole. Tile pistonshould move up and down. Tile piston is at TDCwhen it is up as high as it can go.o Loosen tile rocker jam nut. Use an 10ram allenwrench to turn the pivot ball stud while checkingclearance between tile rocker arm and the valvestem with a Ieeler gauge. Correct clearance is0.002-0.004 inch (0.05-0.1 ram). See Figure 4.6.NOTE:Hold the rocker arm jam nut in place as the pivotball stud is turned. When valve clearance is correct, hold tile pivot ballstud ta place with the allen wrench and tighten tilerocker arm jam nut. Tighten tile jam nut to 174ta/lbs, torque. After tightening tile jam nut, recheckvalve clearance to make sure it did slot change.Figure 4.6 - Valve Clearance AdjustmentJam NutPivot BallStudRockerArmValveStem4,9 C00UNG SYSTEMAir talet and outlet openings ta tile generator eo!n-partment must be open and unobstructed for con-ttaued proper operation. This includes such obstruc-tions as high grass, weeds, brush, leaves and snow.Without sufficient eooltag and ventilating air flow, theengine/generator quickly overheats, which causes itto qtaekly shut down. (See Figure 4.7 lhr vent loca-tions. )-_ WARNING _-/_ The exhaust from this product gets extremelyhot and remains hot after shutdown. High grass, weeds, brush, leaves, etc. must remain dear ofthe exhaust. Such materiMs may ignite and burnfrom the heat of the exhaust system.Figure 4.7- Cooling Vent Locationst /dR INTAKE° Install slew valve cover gasket.o Re-attach the valve cover.NOTE:Start all four screws before tightening or it will notbe possible to get them in place. Make sure thevalve cover gasket is in place,o Re-attach the spark plug wire to tile spark plug., Repeat the process lot the other cylinder.CAUTIONZ_ The maximum ambient temperature for thegenerator [s 48.9 ° C (104 ° F).4.10 ATTENTION AFTER SUBMERSIONIf the generator has been submerged ta water, it MUSTNOT be started and operated. Followtag any submer-sion in water, have a dealer thorolNhly clean and drythe generator.4,11 CORROSION PROTECTIONPeriodically wash and wax tile enclosure using auto-motive type products. Frequent washing is recom-mended in salt water/coastal areas. Spray engtaelinkages with a light oil such as WD-40.19
