1.1 Purpose of the ManualThis manual is intended to provide detailed information forthe installation and of the frequency converter. 2 Instal-lation provides requirements for mechanical and electricalinstallation, including input, motor, control and serialcommunications wiring, and control terminal functions.3 Start Up and Functional Testing provides detailedprocedures for start up, basic operational programming, and functional testing. The remaining chapters providesupplementary details. These include user interface, detailed programming, application examples, start-uptroubleshooting, and specifications.1.2 Additional ResourcesOther resources are available to understand advancedfrequency converter functions and programming.• The VLT® Programming Guide provides greaterdetail on working with parameters and manyapplication examples.• The VLT® Design Guide is intended to providedetailed capabilities and functionality to designmotor control systems.• Supplemental publications and manuals areavailable from Danfoss.See Danfoss website /BusinessAreas/DrivesSo-lutions/Documentations/VLT+Technical+Documentation.htm for listings.• Optional equipment is available that may changesome of the procedures described. Reference theinstructions supplied with those options forspecific requirements. Contact the local Danfosssupplier or visit the Danfoss website /BusinessAreas/DrivesSolutions/Documentations/VLT+Technical+Documen-tation.htm, for downloadsor additional information.1.3 Product OverviewA frequency converter is an electronic motor controllerthat converts AC mains input into a variable AC waveformoutput. The frequency and voltage of the output areregulated to control the motor speed or torque. Thefrequency converter can vary the speed of the motor inresponse to system feedback, such as changingtemperature or pressure for controlling fan, compressor, orpump motors. The frequency converter can also regulatethe motor by responding to remote commands fromexternal controllers. In addition, the frequency converter monitors the systemand motor status, issues warnings or alarms for faultconditions, starts and stops the motor, optimizes energyefficiency, and offers many more control, monitoring, andefficiency functions. Operation and monitoring functionsare available as status indications to an outside controlsystem or serial communication network. For single phase frequency converters (S2 and S4) installedin the EU the following applies:Single phase frequency converters (S2 and S4) with aninput current less than 16 A and an input of more than 1kW are intended for use as professional equipment intrades, professions, or industries. Designated applicationareas are:• Public pools, public water supplies, agriculture, commercial buildings and industries. They are not intended for general public use or use inresidential areas. All other single phase frequencyconverters are only intended for use in private low-voltagesystems interfacing with public supply only at a medium orhigh voltage level. Operators of private systems mustensure that the EMC environment complies with IEC610000-3-6 and/or the contractual agreements.1.4 Internal Components FunctionsIllustration 1.3 is a block diagram of the frequencyconverter's internal components.
