1-1014–001867Chapter 1Preparing to Install VME OptionsThis chapter contains information you should know before removing or installingany hardware equipment in your AViiON computer system.WARNING: Unqualified personnel attempting to remove, install, orservice internal components or options in AViiON 5000, 6000,7000, and 8000 series systems risk both personal injury anddamage to the system. Data General Corporation supportsthe maintenance and expansion of these systems by qualifiedData General personnel only. Service by other thanData General personnel may void product warranties. Formore information regarding Data General warranties, refer toyour Data General sales and field engineering contracts.About the VMEbusThe circuits that make up the VME (Versa Modula Europa or Versa ModuleEuropean) bus on your AViiON system can connect a variety of devices in a closelycoupled hardware configuration. The bus provides data processing, data storage, and peripheral control devices with a standard interface used throughout thecomputer industry. Most VME printed circuit boards also conform to standard sizespecifications; your AViiON system uses Eurocard 6U or 9U form-factor optionboards. How to Use This ManualThe VMEbus Specification manual from Motorola Corporation and thedocumentation on programming your computer’s system I/O (input and output)provide detailed descriptions of how the VMEbus operates. This manual describesonly the minimum steps you need to perform before, during, and immediately afterthe addition of VME option boards to your computer system. It probably containssome information you do not need. For example, most readers setting up theirAViiON systems for the first time can turn directly to Chapter 4 to connect externaldevices to their factory-installed VME boards. Readers adding a new VME boardneed to read this chapter and the sections in Chapters 2 through 4 that apply totheir VME option. To use this book effectively, you may need accompanying documentation. All theprocedures in this book refer you to your computer’s setting up and installingmanual(s) for model-specific information. Other documents you will need depend onthe task you want to complete and the option(s) you plan to install. For example, toadd a VME option board to the computer, you must do the following:
