CE870 Instant Issuance System Installation and Administrator’s Guide 59Single-Wire Smart CardSingle-wire smart card processing allows a single USB or Ethernet connection with the printer tocarry data for both smart card personalization and printing.The single-wire smart card feature is available to an application through the Windows DriverSoftware Development Kit (SDK), or through your card personalization software.Required components for single-wire smart card are the same as for other smart card systemsexcept as noted.Embossing and Indenting DesignThe CEM Embosser is the component of a cardproduction system that creates the raisedlettering and numbering on the front of mostfinancial or debit cards. Inside the embosser, youfind the embossing wheel and topping andindent ribbon cartridges. The embossing wheelcan be purchased with up to 75 punch and die orpunch and anvil (indent) pairs. A second wheeloption allows for up to 75 additional punch anddie characters (indent is not available on thesecond wheel). Features of the embossing wheelthat are determined at time of purchase include multiple font choices and a variety of specialcharacters.The embossing wheel with indent characters allows you to produce characters that are pressedinto (indented) the front or back surface of the card. The most common use of indent charactersis to create the Bank Identification Number (BIN) and Card Security Code (CSC), sometimes calledthe Card Verification Value (CVV), on financial credit and debit cards. Indent ribbon is available inblack or white. A special paneled ribbon (paneled black and white) also is available. The paneledribbon is designed to apply a four-character BIN in white on the front of the card and sevencharacters (last four digits of the account number and three CVV characters) in black on the cardback.The embosser can emboss up to five lines of text or numbers. Topping foil is then heat sealed tothe embossed characters. The foil is available in five colors.The single-wire smart card programming interface is similar, but not identical, tothe PC/SC standard. Applications using PC/SC to personalize smart cards requiremodification to use the single-wire smart card interface.
