Otherexamples of adapters include network andSCSI adapters.BBIOS(Basic Input/Output System) The part of theoperating system in a system that provides the lowestlevel interface to peripheral devices. BIOS also refersto the Basic Input/Input Output System of other“intelligent” devices, such as RAID controllers.BIOS Configuration UtilityThe BIOS Configuration Utility configures andmaintains user configurable controller parameters. The utility resides in the controller BIOS and itsoperation is independent of the operating systems onyour system. The BIOS Configuration Utility, alsoknown as Ctrl-C, is built on elements called controls. Each control performs a function.CControllerA chip that controls the transfer of data betweenthe microprocessor and memory or between themicroprocessor and a peripheral device such as aphysical disk or the keyboard. RAID controllersperform RAID functions such as striping andmirroring to provide data protection.DDiskA non-volatile, randomly addressable, rewriteablemass storage device, including both rotating magneticand optical storage devices and solid-state storagedevices, or non-volatile electronic storage elements.DKMSDKMS stands for Dynamic Kernel Module Support. It is designed to create a framework where kerneldependent module source can reside so that it is veryeasy to rebuild modules as you upgrade kernels. Thiswill allow Linux vendors to provide driver dropswithout having to wait for new kernel releases whilealso taking out the guesswork for customersattempting to recompile modules for new kernels.YD912bk1.book Page 59 Monday, April 2, 2007 4:39 PM
