If installing in a brick-bottom fireplace, mark screw locationsin mortar joint of bricks.8. Remove heater base from fireplace. Ifinstalling optional control accessories,do so at this time. Follow all directionsprovided with accessory.9. Drill holes at marked locations using3/16" drill bit.10. Attach base assembly to fireplace floorusing two masonry screws (in hardwarepackage).FittingFlexible GasHose (if allowedby local codes)CONNECTING TO GASSUPPLYWARNING: A qualified serviceperson must connect heater togas supply. Follow all local codes.WARNING: Never connectpropane/LP heater directly to thepropane/LP supply. This heaterrequires an external regulator (notsupplied). Install the externalregulator between the heater andpropane/LP supply.Installation Items NeededBefore installing heater, make sure you havethe items listed below.• external regulator (for propane/LP unitsonly, supplied by installer)• piping (check local codes)• sealant (resistant to propane/LP gas)• equipment shutoff valve *• test gauge connection *• sediment trap• tee joint• pipe wrench* A CSA design-certified equipment shutoffvalve with 1/8" NPT tap is an acceptablealternative to test gauge connection. Pur-chase the optional CSA design-certifiedequipment shutoff valve from your dealer.See Accessories, page 24.For Propane/LP Gas: The installer mustsupply an external regulator. The externalregulator will reduce incoming gas pressure. You must reduce incoming gas pressure tobetween 11 and 14 inches of water. If you donot reduce incoming gas pressure, heaterregulator damage could occur. Install exter-nal regulator with the vent pointing down asshown in Figure 13. Pointing the vent downprotects it from freezing rain or sleet.INSTALLATIONContinuedWARNING: Never connectnatural gas heater to private (non-utility) gas wells. This gas is com-monly known as wellhead gas.Installation must include an equipmentshutoff valve, union, and plugged 1/8" NPTtap. Locate NPT tap within reach for testgauge hook up. NPT tap must be upstreamfrom heater (see Figure 14, page 12).IMPORTANT: Install equipment shutoffvalve in an accessible location. The equip-ment shutoff valve is for turning on orshutting off the gas to the appliance.Check your building codes for any specialrequirements for locating equipment shutoffvalve to fireplaces.Apply pipe joint sealant lightly to male NPTthreads. This will prevent excess sealantfrom going into pipe. Excess sealant in pipecould result in clogged heater valves.CAUTION: Use only new, black iron or steel pipe. Inter-nally-tinned copper tubing maybe used in certain areas. Checkyour local codes. Use pipe of 1/2"diameter or greater to allowproper gas volume to heater. Ifpipe is too small, undue loss ofvolume will occur.WARNING: Use pipe joint seal-ant that is resistant to liquid pe-troleum (LP) gas.ContinuedOFFPILOTONHILOFigure 11 - Attaching Flexible Gas Hoseto HeaterFigure 12 - Attaching Base Assembly toFireplace FloorMasonry ScrewMounting FlangesFigure 13 - External Regulator With VentPointing Down (propane/LP gas only)Propane/LPSupplyTankExternalRegulatorVentPointingDown
