Be sure tosmell next to the floor because somegas is heavier than air and will settleon the floor.WHAT TO DO IF YOU SMELL GAS• Do not try to light any appliance.• Do not touch any electric switch; donot use any phone in your building.• Immediately call your gas supplierfrom a neighbor’s phone. Follow thegas supplier’s instructions.• If you cannot reach your gas supplier,call the fire department.C. Use only your hand to push in or turnthe gas control knob. Never use tools.If the knob will not push in or turn byhand, don’t try to repair it, call a qualifiedservice technician. Force or attemptedrepair may result in a fire or explosion.D. Do not use this appliance if any parthas been under water. Immediately calla qualified service technician to inspectthe appliance and to replace any part ofthe control system and any gas controlwhich has been under water.LIGHTINGINSTRUCTIONS1. STOP! Read the safety information above.2. Make sure equipment shutoff valve is fullyopen.3. Turn off any electric power to the appli-ance if service is to be performed.4. Turn control knob clockwise to theOFF position.5. Wait five (5) minutes to clear out anygas. Then smell for gas, including nearthe floor. If you smell gas, STOP! Follow“B” in the safety information above. If youdon’t smell gas, go to the next step.6. Thermostat Models: Turn control knobcounterclockwise to the PILOTposition. Press in control knob for five (5)seconds.Manual Models: Press in and turn controlknob counterclockwise to the PI-LOT position. Keep control knob pressedin for five (5) seconds.7. With control knob pressed in, push downand release ignitor button. This will lightpilot. The pilot is attached to the front ofburner.Note: You may be running this heaterfor the first time after hooking up to gassupply. If so, the control knob may needto be pressed in for 30 seconds or more.This will allow air to bleed from the gassystem.If needed, keep pressing ignitor buttonuntil pilot lights. If ignitor does not lightpilot, refer to Troubleshooting, page 18or contact a qualified service person orgas supplier for repairs. Until repairs aremade, light pilot with match. See ManualLighting Procedure, page 15.8. Keep control knob pressed in for 30 sec-onds after lighting pilot. After 30 seconds,release control knob.• If control knob does not pop up whenreleased, contact a qualified serviceperson or gas supplier for repairs.Note: If pilot goes out, repeat steps 4 thru7. Thermostat models have a safety inter-lock system. Wait one (1) minute beforelighting pilot again.9. Turn control knob counterclockwiseto desired heating level. The mainburner should light. Manual control heat-ers should be used in locked positions.WARNING: Always operatemanual control heaters at thelocked positions. Operationbetween these positions maycreate a possible health hazardif used in a poorly ventilatedroom. Read owner’s manual forcomplete instructions.CAUTION: Do not try to ad-just heating levels by using theequipment shutoff valve.
