I.B. 32-255-GPage 8Effective 12/02SECTION 3: RECEIVING, HANDLING ANDSTORAGE3-1 GENERALType VCP-W Vacuum Circuit Breaker Elements aresubjected to complete factory production tests andinspection before being packed. They are shipped inpackages designed to provide maximum protection tothe equipment during shipment and storage and at thesame time to provide convenient handling. Tools, suchas the maintenance tool, are shipped separately.3-2 RECEIVINGIf the circuit breaker element is not to be used immedi-ately but is to be placed in storage; maximum protectioncan be obtained by keeping it packed as shipped.Upon receipt of the equipment, inspect the containersfor any signs of damage or rough handling. Open thecontainers carefully to avoid any damage to the con-tents. Use a nail puller rather than a crow bar whenrequired. When opening the containers, be careful tosave any loose items or hardware that may be other-wise discarded with the packing material. Check thecontents of each package against the packing list.Examine the circuit breaker element for any signs ofshipping damage such as broken, missing or loosehardware, damaged or deformed insulation and othercomponents. File claims immediately with the carrier ifdamage or loss is detected and notify the nearestCutler-Hammer Office.3-3 HANDLINGDO NOT USE ANY LIFTING DEVICE AS A PLAT-FORM FOR PERFORMING MAINTENANCE, REPAIROR ADJUSTMENT OF THE BREAKER OR FOROPENING, CLOSING THE CONTACTS OR CHARG-ING THE SPRINGS. THE CIRCUIT BREAKER ELE-MENT MAY SLIP OR FALL CAUSING SEVERE PER-SONAL INJURY. ALWAYS PERFORM MAINTE-NANCE, REPAIR AND ADJUSTMENTS ON A SOLIDWORK SURFACE CAPABLE OF SUPPORTING THEBREAKER ELEMENT.When a breaker element is ready for installation, a liftingyoke in conjunction with an overhead lifter or portablefloor lifter can be used to move a breaker element. When a breaker element is to be lifted, position the lift-ing yoke over the breaker element and insert lifters intothe breaker element side openings with the lifting holetoward the interrupters. Once the lifting yoke is securelyseated in the holes, the breaker element can be careful-ly lifted and moved.3-4 STORAGEIf the circuit breaker element is to be placed in storage, maximum protection can be obtained by keeping itpacked as shipped. Before placing it in storage, checksshould be made to make sure that the breaker elementis free from shipping damage and is in satisfactory oper-ating condition. The circuit breaker element is shipped with its contactsopen and closing springs discharged. The indicators onthe front panel should confirm this. Insert the mainte-nance tool in the manual charge socket opening (Figure3-3). Charge the closing springs by pumping the handleup and down approximately 38 times until a crisp metal-lic “click” is heard. This indicates that the closing springsare charged and is shown by the closing spring“charged” (yellow) indicator. Remove the maintenancetool. Operate the push-to-close button. The breaker ele-ment will close as shown by the breaker contacts“closed” (red) indicator. Operate the push-to-open but-ton. The breaker element will trip as shown by thebreaker contacts “open” (green) indicator. After complet-ing this initial check, leave the closing springs “dis-charged” and breaker contacts “open”.Outdoor storage of the breaker element is NOT recom-mended. If unavoidable, the outdoor location must bewell drained and a temporary shelter from sun, rain, snow, corrosive fumes, dirt, falling objects and exces-sive moisture must be provided. Containers should bearranged to permit free circulation of air on all sides andtemporary heaters should be used to minimize conden-sation. Moisture can cause rusting of metal parts anddeterioration of high voltage insulation. A heat level ofapproximately 400 watts for each 100 cubic feet of vol-ume is recommended with the heaters distributed uni-formly throughout the structure near the floor.Indoor storage should be in a building with sufficientheat and air circulation to prevent condensation. If thebuilding is not heated, the same general rule for heat asfor outdoor storage should be applied.! CAUTION
