Untanking the regulatorWARNINGPersonal Injury Do not rely on the lifting apparatuswhen the internal assembly is lifted for inspection ormaintenance Blocking should be placed between thecover and the top of the tank to keep the assemblyfrom falling, which can cause death or severe personalinjury and equipment damage VR-T220 0CAUTIONEquipment Misoperation Do not subject tap-changerwith phenolic contact boards to temperatures above150 °F (66 °C) To do so may cause damage to thecontact panels, resulting in misalignment of thecontacts, and can cause personal injury and equipmentdamage VR-T221 0CAUTIONEquipment Damage Before untanking a regulator thatcontains a thermometere: (1) Lower the insulating fluidlevel below the thermometer, then; (2) Remove thethermometer well Failure to do so will result in damageto the thermometer well and can cause spillage of theinsulating fluid when the internal assembly is lifted, causing personal injury VR-T222 1CAUTIONEquipment Damage Do not suspend the controlbox using the control cable The control cable is notdesigned to support the weight of the control boxThe control box can fall, causing personal injury andequipment damage VR-T223 0Remove the regulator from service (see “Removal fromservice” on page 11) and untank the unit to verifycontact wear, insulating fluid dielectrics, etc. The fluidshould be checked (a) prior to energizing if the regulatorhas not been energized for a long time period and (b) atnormal maintenance intervals. Table 5 and Table 6 containinformation on acceptable insulating fluid characteristics forEnvirotemp™ FR3™ fluid and mineral oil, respectively.1. Manually run the tap-changer to neutral, if possible. If not, record the position indicator reading beforeproceeding to untank.2. Disconnect the control cable from the bottom of thejunction box (see Figure 1).3. Remove the series arrester.4. Release internal pressure using the pressure-reliefdevice on the side of the regulator tank.5. Free the cover by removing the clamping ring or thecover bolts.6. Attach a sling or hooks with a spreader bar to the liftingeyes and raise the cover, with the attached core-and-coil assembly, until the top of the coil is approximatelyone inch under the insulating fluid (see Figure 22).otee:N As a safety precaution, use blocking betweenthe cover and the tank lip until inspection of thetap-changer or other maintenance is complete.otee:N A service cable assembly is available foroperating an untanked regulator from themounted control cabinet if the connectioncable is not long enough.
