1Instruction Booklet IB 33-790-1JEffective November 2010Instructions for Low Voltage PowerCircuit Breakers Types DS and DSLEaToN CorPoraTIoN www.eaton.comIntroductionThese instructions cover the description, operation andmaintenance of Eaton Type DS and Type DSLLow Voltage AC Power Circuit Breakers and Type DSDrawout Fuse Trucks. These breakers are usually sup-plied as part of low voltage metal enclosed switchgear ofthe four-position drawout type. These instructions applyonly to the circuit breaker and its auxiliary drawout detailswhich have been designed as a completely integrateddrawout unit. Type DS Breakers (not DSL) may also besupplied in a fixed mounted version. In this case the sec-tions of this book referring to the levering device, positioninterlocks, and spring discharge interlock will not apply. The DS and DSL Circuit Breakers operate on the mag-netic De-ion principle of interruption. In these breakersthe arc rises into a series of insulated steel plates. Theplates break the rising arc into a series of smaller arcs tocool and extinguish them and funnel the heat to ambientair.DS and DSL Breakers are available for application at volt-ages from 208 to 600 Vac; with continuous currents of 50to 4000 amps; and with interrupting capabilities up to200,000 amps. Refer to the breaker nameplate for thecomplete rating information for any given breaker. Break-ers conform to NEMA, ANSI, and IEEE standards.TYPE DS AND DSL BREAKERS ARE PROTECTIVEDEVICES. AS SUCH, THE Y ARE MAXIMUM CUR-RENT RATED DEVICES. THE REFORE, THE YSHOULD NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES BEAPPLIED OUTSIDE THE IR NAMEPLATE RATINGS.OPERATION OUTSIDE OF THESE RATINGS MAYCAUSE THE EQUIPMENT TO FAIL, RESULTING INBODILY INJURY AND PROPERTY DAMAGE.The available DS and DSL Breakers and their rated per-formance capabilities are given in Tables 1 and 2.Also short-time ratings.Short circuit ratings of non-automatic breakers except the DS-840 which is 65,000.Maximum voltages at which the interrupting ratings apply are:System Voltage Maximum Voltage208 or 240 254480 508600 635Interrupting ratings are based on the standard duty cycle con-sisting of an opening operation, a 15 second interval and aclose-open operation, in succession, with delayed tripping incase of short-delay devices. The standard duty cycle for short-time ratings consists of main-taining the rated current for two periods of 1/2 second each, with a 15-second interval of zero current between the two periods.Table 1 - Type DS Breaker RatingsBreakerTypeFrame Size,Amp.Interrupting Ratings, RMS Symmetrical AmperesWith Instantaneous Trip With Short Delay Trip208-240V 480V 600V 208-240V 480V 600VDS-206 800 42,000 30,000 30,000 30,000 30,000 30,000DS-206S 800 50,000 42,000 42,000 42,000 42,000 42,000DS-416 1600 65,000 50,000 42,000 50,000 50,000 42,000DS-416S 1600 65,000 65,000 50,000 65,000 65,000 50,000DS-420 2000 65,000 65,000 50,000 65,000 65,000 50,000DS-632 3200 85,000 65,000 65,000 65,000 65,000 65,000DS-840 4000 130,000 85,000 85,000 85,000 85,000 85,000
