14Instruction Booklet IB 33-790-1JEffective November 2010Instructions for Low Voltage PowerCircuit Breakers Types DS and DSLEaToN CorPoraTIoN www.eaton.comthe levering device arms must be rotated away from theREMOVE position to the TEST position. If charging isattempted in the REMOVE position, the closing cam willrotate past the charged position and go through atrip-free “closing” operation, i.e., the springs will dis-charge without moving the breaker contacts. Do notattempt to charge the springs in the DISCONNECT posi-tion as the same action may occur. After turning thelevering device to TEST position, manually charge thesprings. On manually operated breakers, the springs arecharged by a single stroke downward on thespring-charge handle, rotating it about 90° toward youuntil it suddenly becomes very easy to move and thentends to run away from your hand. At the same time, youwill hear a metallic “click!” as the over center closingspring stop is reached. Note that the spring charge indi-cator now shows “Spring Charged.”DO NOT RELEASE THE HANDLE BEFORE THECHARGING OPERATION IS COMPLETED. TORELEASE HANDLE BEFORE CHARGING COMPLE-TION WILL RETURN HANDLE UPWARDS WITH SUCHVELOCITY THAT IT MAY BREAK THE HANDLE KNOBOR CAUSE BODILY INJURY.HOLD BREAKER TO PREVENT TILTING FORWARDWHEN HAND CHARGING CLOSING SPRINGS WITHTHE BREAKER ON THE EXTENDED RAILS. OTHER-WISE, IT MAY TOPPLE TO THE FLOOR AND CAUSEBODILY INJURY OR EQUIPMENT DAMAGE.On power operated breakers, a short spring-charge han-dle is included for emergency operation. This works on aratchet principle, and requires 10 to 12 pumping opera-tions to completely charge the springs. At this point, thesame metallic “click” will be heard; and the spring chargeindicator will show “Spring Charged.” The handle mustnot be forced beyond this point.Note: Power-operated breakers, when being leveredinto the compartment, will have the spring-chargemotor run and charge the spring automatically as theTEST position is reached.4.3 CLOSE THE BREAKERThe breaker can be closed only when the following condi-tions are met:1. The closing springs are charged.2. The levering arms are in either the TEST position, asin Figure 7 or in the CONNECT position, Figure 8.3. The levering device crank handle has been removedand the shutter is closed.4. Undervoltage trip device (if included) has been ener-gized.5. Blown limiter indicator (for DSL breakers only) isreset.Having met these conditions, close the breaker by push-ing on the close bar. Note that the breaker position indi-cator shows “Breaker Closed”, against a red background. Also that the spring-charge indicator now shows “SpringDischarged.”Some power-operated breakers are interlocked to pre-vent manual closing from the close bar on the front panelwhen in the CONNECT position. In this case crank thelevering device to the TEST position to operate. Thisinterlock is covered by Section 5.1.8.2.It is possible to recharge the springs immediately afterclosing the breaker. This results in increased strain onthe mechanism, and it is recommended that this be doneonly if the operating procedure requires this condition.Note: If closing is attempted with the levering arms inother than the TEST or CONNECT positions, with orwithout the levering crank in place, a trip-free “clos-ing” operation is performed but the breaker contactsdo not close. This trip free type of operation resultsin more shock on some parts of the mechanism thannormal closing operations. Therefore, this type ofoperation should be avoided if possible.4.4 OPEN THE BREAKERThe breaker can be opened in the following ways:1. By hand operation of the trip plate (on the breaker oron the compartment door.)2. Automatically by overload, short circuit or undervolt-age condition.3. Breakers equipped for power operation can betripped electrically by a shunt trip device energizedby hand switch or relay. For the present purpose of getting acquainted with thebreaker, open it by pushing on the trip plate. Note that thebreaker position indicator now shows “Breaker-open”,against a green background.CAUTIONCAUTION
