Exceeding the nameplate ratings of an LBS switchmay cause property damage, severe injury, ordeath.Page 3Do not apply an LBS switch beyond its nameplateratings.1.3 Safety FeaturesThe Type LBS load interrupter switch is manufacturedwith several built-in interlock provisions and safetyfeatures to reduce hazards and provide properoperating sequences:1. A mechanical interlock prevents opening themain door when the switch is in the closedposition.2. An additional interlock prevents inadvertentclosing of the switch when the front enclosuredoor is open.3. The switch design includes provisions forpadlocking the switch in the open or closedposition.4. Mechanical indicators with labels showwhether the switch is open or closed.5. Optional key interlock provisions may beprovided for Main-Tie-Main and otherconfigurations. Refer to the specific orderdrawings to determine if key interlocks havebeen provided.6. A grounded metal safety screen is locatedbehind the medium voltage door. The screenprevents inadvertent contact with live parts yetallows full-view inspection of the switch bladeposition.Danger!Type LBS switches are often energized by a back-fedcondition that allows the blades to be energized with theswitch in the open position. The line-side break jawsare also likely to be energized with the switch open. All power sources must be isolated and locked outbefore removing the safety screen.1.4 Safe PracticesOnly qualified electrical workers with training andexperience on medium voltage circuits should bepermitted to work on this equipment. They should befamiliar with the work to be performed, the safetyequipment required, and hazards involved.Read and understand these instructions beforeattempting any assembly, operation, or maintenance ofan LBS switch.Disconnect all power sources before making anyadjustments or performing maintenance.WARNING!Defeating or disengaging safety interlocks on anLBS switch that is properly installed and connectedto a power source may result in property damage, bodily injury or death.Do not defeat or disengage any safety interlocks whenthe switch is connected to any power source.Never energize an LBS switch without the arc chutesand phase barriers installed.Always be sure that all hardware is in place andproperly tightened before putting an LBS switch intooperation after any maintenance operation. The contactand blade hardware must be tightened as described inSection 5 to provide the correct contact pressure whilemaintaining free operation of the blades.SECTION 2 – RECEIVING, HANDLING ANDSTORAGE2.1 ReceivingWhen receiving an LBS switch, a visual inspectionshould be performed immediately upon receipt of theswitch and before removing it from the truck. Shippingpapers should be checked to be sure that all boxes orother accompanying pieces have been received. If anydamage or shortages are evident, a claim should befiled at once with the carrier and the nearest Cutler-Hammer sales office should be notified.2.2 HandlingAn LBS switch is insulated for high voltages and mustbe protected at all times against damage duringhandling.2.3 StorageIf it is necessary to store an LBS switch beforeinstallation, keep it in a clean, dry location with ample aircirculation and heat to prevent condensation. Like allelectrical apparatus, an LBS switch contains insulationthat must be protected against dirt and moisture.
