Inspect arc chute sides for cracks or erosion andreplace if damaged. Use a flashlight to examine thearcing contacts inside the arc chute. If contacts arefound to be burned or pitted over half of their surface, orif the contacts are out of alignment, the arc chuteshould be replaced.Page 7CAUTION!Slow closing or slow opening the switch using themaintenance hub may result in bodily injury if careis not taken to hold the operating handle firmly.Be sure to hold the handle firmly while performing slowclosing or slow opening operations.5.1.3 Flicker Blade Engagement CheckFirst, close the switch. Next, insert the removablehandle in the pipe-like maintenance hub welded to theswitch shaft (see Fig. 7) and slowly open the switch. The flicker blades should remain engaged in theircontact fingers while the main blades open. When themain blades clear the break jaws, they will hit a stop onthe flicker blade brackets and start the flicker blades outof their contact fingers. The flicker blades will then snapopen from the forces in their charged torsion springs.Inspect the tightness of the bolts securing the flickerblades to their mounting brackets. Inspect the flickerblade mounting bracket to insure that does not pivot upand down on its mounting bolt. Tighten the bolt ifpivoting is observed. Do not overtighten. To verify thatthe mounting bracket bolt has not been overtightened, push the flicker blade to the rear. It should reboundsmoothly.Fig. 7 Use of Maintenance Hub5.1.4 Interphase Barrier InspectionCheck interphase barriers for carbon or metallicdeposits. Replace if deposits are present.5.1.5 Cleanliness checkWipe away any dust or dirt that may have accumulatedon the switch parts, paying close attention to insulatorsand insulating material.5.1.6 Mechanical Operation CheckClose and open the de-energized switch at least threetimes to check the performance of the operatingmechanism.5.2 Alignment ProceduresCheck each of the following items for adjustment andalignment. If out of adjustment and alignment, followthe instructions given.WARNING!Failure to completely disconnect the switch from allpower sources prior to inspection may result insevere injury or death. The switch must be completely disconnected from allpower sources before performing inspection.5.2.1 Override of Door / Switch MechanismInterlockTo close the switch with the door open, the interlockmust be disengaged. To close the switch, insert thehandle into the handle casting and push upward, at thesame time push the latch that is accessible through aslot in the handle cover inward until the handle castingclears the interlocking bolt. (See Fig. 8) To open theswitch, reverse this procedure, making sure that thedoor interlock is fully depressed.MaintenanceHubFig. 8 Override of Switch Interlock Safety Latch
