This enablessmall items such as desserts, cream cakesand pieces of meat, fish and poultry to bedefrosted.Defrosting in this way speeds up the processand protects the food from flies. Pieces of meat, fish and poultry should be placed on a rack, over a tray to catch any drips. Be sure to washthe rack and tray after defrosting.Defrost with the oven door closed.Large items, such as whole chickens andjoints should not be defrosted in this way. Werecommend this be carried out in a refrigerator.Defrosting should not be carried out in a warmoven or when an adjoining oven is in use or stillwarm.Ensure that dairy foods, meat and poultry arecompletely defrosted before cooking.Fan ovenThis function operates the fan and theheating element around it. An even heat isproduced throughout the oven, allowing youto cook large amounts quickly.Fan oven cooking is particularly suitable forbaking on several shelves at one time and is agood ‘all-round’ function. It may be necessaryto reduce the temperature by approximately10°C for recipes previously cooked in aconventional oven.If you wish to pre-heat the oven, wait until theindicator light has gone out before insertingthe food.Fanned grilling in the ovenThis function operates the fan whilst thetop element is on. It produces a more even, lessfierce heat than a conventional grill. For bestresults, place the food to be grilled, on a gridover a roasting tin, which should be smallerthan a conventional grill pan. This allowsgreater air circulation. Thick pieces of meator fish are ideal for grilling in this way, as thecirculated air reduces the fierceness of the heatfrom the grill. The oven door should be keptclosed whilst grilling is in progress, so savingenergy. You will also find that the food needsto be watched and turned less than for normalgrilling. Pre-heat this function before cooking.Fan assisted ovenThis function operates the fan, circulatingair heated by the elements at the top and thebase of the oven. The combination of fan andconventional cooking (top and base heat)makes this function ideal for cooking largeitems that need thorough cooking, such as alarge meat roast. It is also possible to bake ontwo shelves at one time, although they willneed to be swapped over during the cookingtime, as the heat at the top of the oven isgreater than at the base, when using thisfunction. This is a fast intensive form of cooking; keepan eye on the food cooking until you havebecome accustomed to this function.Conventional oven (top and baseheat)This function combines the heat from the topand base elements. It is particularly suitable forroasting and baking pastry, cakes and biscuits.Food cooked on the top shelf will brown andcrisp faster than on the lower shelf, becausethe heat is greater at the top of the oven thanat the base, as in ‘Fan assisted oven’ function.Similar items being cooked will need to beswapped around for even cooking. This meansthat foods requiring different temperatures canbe cooked together, using the cooler zone inthe lower half of the oven and hotter area tothe top.
