Thecustomer should be aware that compliance with the above conditions may notprevent degradation of service in some situations.Repairs to certified equipment should be made by an authorized Canadian maintenancefacility designated by the supplier. Any repairs or alterations made by the user to thisequipment, or equipment malfunctions, may give the telecommunications companycause to request the user to disconnect the equipment.Users should ensure for their own protection that the electrical ground connectionsof the power utility, telephone lines and internal metallic water pipe systems, ifpresent, are connected together. This precaution may be particularly important inrural areas.CAUTION: Users should not attempt to make such connections themselves, but shouldcontact the appropriate electric inspection authority, or electrician, as appropriate.NOTES: This equipment may not be used on coin service provided by the telephonecompany.INTERFERENCE INFORMATIONThis equipment generates and uses radio frequency energy which may interfere withresidential radio and television reception if not properly installed and used inaccordance with instructions contained in this manual. Reasonable protectionagainst such interference is ensured, although there is no guarantee this will notoccur in a given installation. If interference is suspected and verified by switchingthis equipment on and off, the user is encouraged to try to correct the interference byone or more of the following measures: Reorient the radio/television receiver’santenna, relocate the equipment with respect to the receiver, plug the equipment andreceiver into separate circuit outlets. The user may also wish to consult a qualifiedradio/television technician for additional suggestions. This equipment has been fullytested and complies with all limits for Class B computing devices pursuant to part 15FCC Rules and Regulations. If you don’t have amodular jack, call your local phone company to find outhow to get one installed.IMPORTANT I NSTALLATION I NFORMATION• Never install telephone wiring during a lightning storm.• Never install telephone jacks in wet locations unless the jack is specificallydesigned for wet locations.• Never touch uninsulated telephone wires or terminals, unless the telephone linehas been disconnected at the network interface.• Use caution when installing or modifying telephone lines.• Temporarily disconnect any equipment connected to the phone such as faxes,other phones, or modems.INSTALLING THE PHONEYour telephone should beplaced on a level surfacesuch as a desk or table top,or you can mount it on awall. A desktop/wallmounting pedestal is builtinto the base of the phone.1. Slide the RINGER volumeswitch (on the handset)to the desired volume.2. Set PULSE/TONE switch (on the handset) to TONE for touch-tone service, or set itto PULSE for rotary service. If you don’t know which type of service you have,check with the phone company.3. Set the receiver volume switch (on the handset) tothe desired listening volume.4. Plug the telephone line cord into a modular wallphone jack.W ALL MOUNT I NSTALLATIONYour telephone may also be mounted on a wall plate(not included).NOTE: To prevent the handset from falling outof the cradle while the phone is hanging on thewall, you must reverse the handset hook(located on the base).1. Push the handset hook up and out with your thumb, turn it over, and replace it inthe slot on the base.2. Plug the telephone line cord into a modular wall phone jack.3. Slip the mounting holes on the base over the wall plate posts and firmly slide theunit down into place (wall plate not included).W RAPPING THE T ELEPHONE LINE CORDIn desktop or wall mount mode, you may want to wrap the excess telephone line cordaround the mounting bracket on the bottom of the base.TELEPHONE OPERATIONR EDIALThis unit redials up to 32 digits. To automatically redial the last number you called:1. Pick up the handset and wait for a dial tone.2. Press the redial button.FLASHPress the flash button instead of the hook switch to activate custom calling servicessuch as call waiting or call transfer. Custom calling services are provided by thephone company.R ECEIVER V OLUMEYou may control the listening level with the volume switch on the side of the handset.It has three levels: low, mid, and high.R INGER V OLUMEYou may control the ringer volume level with the switch located on the side of thehandset.= ringer tone will be loud= ringer tone will be low= telephone will not ring.TEMPORARY TONE D IALINGThis feature is useful only if you have pulse dialing service. Temporary Tone Dialingenables pulse (rotary) service phone users to access touch-tone services offered bybanks, credit card companies, etc. For example, when you call your bank you mayneed to enter your bank account number. Temporarily switching to Touch Tone modeallows you to send your number.1. Dial the telephone number and wait for the line to connect.2. When your call is answered, press the * tone button on the handset number padto temporarily change from PULSE dialing to TONE dialing.3. Follow the automated instructions to get the information you need.4. Hang up the handset and the phone automatically returns to PULSE (rotary)dialing mode.MEMORYEach memory button is capable of storing phone numbers up to 16 digits. Memorylocations 0-9 require you to press the mem button for access.STORING A NUMBER IN M EMORY1. Pick up the handset, and press the store button.2. Dial the number to be stored (up to 16 digits).3. Press store again.4. Press a memory location button 0-9, and hang up the handset.INSERTING A P AUSE IN THE D IALING S EQUENCEUse the redial button to add pauses to a dialing sequence, for example after you dial9 for an outside line. A pause is approximately 4 seconds long.C HANGING A S TORED NUMBERTo change a stored number, you just replace it with a different number using theprocedure for storing a number.DIALING A STORED NUMBER1. Pick up the handset, and wait for a dial tone.2. For numbers stored in memory locations 0-9, press the mem button, and thennumber of the location in which the desired number is stored.NOTE: Stored numbers are saved using the telephone line power cord. Ifyou disconnect the line cord from the modular phone (wall) jack, thenumbers stored in memory are lost.DELETING A STORED NUMBER FROM M EMORY1. Press the store button.2. Press the redial button.3. Press the store button again.4. Press the memory location where the number is stored.CHAIN D IALINGLink several memory locations in sequence by following this example:Number is ForMemory LocationLong distance access number 7Authorization code 8Frequently called long distance number 91. Pick up the handset to get a dial tone.2. Press the mem button, and then press 7.3. When you hear the access tone, press the mem button, and then press 8.4. At the next access tone, press the mem button, and then 9.IMPORTANT: If you make test calls to emergency numbers, remain onthe line and explain the reason for the call to the dispatcher. Also, makethese calls in off-peak hours, such as early morning or late evening.NOTE: If you make a mistake while storing a number, hang up and repeatthe storing procedure.TROUBLESHOOTING TIPSNo dial tone:• Press and release the hook switch. Check the hook switch: Does it fully extendwhen the handset is lifted from the cradle?Cannot dial out:• Make sure the TONE/PULSE switch is set to the type of phone service you aresubscribed to.Phone doesn’t ring:• Make sure RINGER switch (located on the handset) is set to loud or low.• You may have too many extension phones on your line. Unplug some extensionphones.• Check for a dial tone. If there is no dial tone see solutions for "No dial tone."Other party cannot hear you:• Make sure phone cord is securely plugged in.• Make sure extension phones are on the hook at the same time you're using thephone. It is normal for the volume to drop when additional extension phones areused at the same time.Phone "howls" when handset is placed near base and handset volume level is too high:• This is normal feedback due to handset volume level being set to maximum.GENERAL P RODUCT C ARETo keep your telephone working and looking good, follow these guidelines:• Avoid putting the phone near heating appliances and devices that generateelectrical noise (for example, motors or fluorescent lamps).• DO NOT expose to direct sunlight or moisture.• Avoid dropping and other rough treatment to the phone.• Clean with a soft cloth.• Never use a strong cleaning agent or abrasive powder because this will damagethe finish.• Retain the original packaging in case you need to ship the phone at a later date.TELEPHONE N ETWORK I NFORMATIONShould your equipment cause trouble on your line which may harm the telephonenetwork, the telephone company, where practicable, may notify you that temporarydiscontinuance of service may be required. Where prior notice is not practicable andthe circumstances warrant such action, the telephone company may temporarilydiscontinue service immediately.The telephone company may make changes in its communications facilities,equipment, operations or procedures where such action is required in the operationof its business. If these changes are expected to affect the use or performance ofyour telephone equipment, the telephone company will likely give you adequatenotice to allow you to maintain uninterrupted service.Notice must be given to the telephone company upon termination of your telephonefrom your line.REN NUMBEROn the bottom of this equipment is a label indicating, among other information, theRinger Equivalence Number (REN) for the equipment.The REN is useful in determining the number of devices you may connect to yourtelephone line and still have all of these devices ring when your telephone number iscalled. In most (but not all) areas, the sum of the RENs of all devices connected toone line should not exceed 5. To be certain of the number of devices you mayconnect to your line as determined by the REN, you should contact your localtelephone company.SERVICEATLINKS Communications Canada, Inc., warrants to the purchaser or gift recipientthat if any manufacturing defect becomes apparent in this product within 1 year fromthe original date of purchase, it will be replaced free of charge, including returntransportation.This warranty does not include damage to the product resulting from accidents,misuse or leaking batteries.Should your product not perform properly during the warranty period, either:1.
