Safety Instructions Operating Instructions Care and Cleaning Troubleshooting Tips Customer ServiceUsing the surface burners.Throughout this manual, features and appearance may vary from your model. How to Light a Surface BurnerYour surface burners are lit by electricignition, eliminating the need for standingpilot lights with constantly burning flames.Push the control knob in and turn itcounterclockwise to theLITE position. After the burner ignites, turn the knob toadjust the flame size. To turn the burneroff, turn the knob clockwise as far as it willgo, to theOFF position.nIn case of a power failure, you can light the surfaceburners on your range with a match. Hold a lit matchto the burner, then push in and turn the control knobto the LITE position. Use extreme caution whenlighting burners this way. Surface burners in usewhen an electrical power failure occurs will continueto operate normally.nDo not operate the burner for an extended period oftime without cookware on the grate. The finish onthe grate may chip without cookware to absorb theheat.nCheck to be sure the burner you turn on is the oneyou want to use.nBe sure the burners and grates are cool before youplace your hand, a pot holder, cleaning cloths orother materials on them.nThe smaller burner (right rear position) will give thebest simmer results. The lowest setting of theburner has a small flame to provide simmeringcapability. To simmer foods, set the cooktop controlknob to the lowest setting that will maintain thedesired simmer. If simmering on one burner and theother burners are turned on, the gas flow of thesimmering burner may have to be adjusted.Be sure you turn the control knobto OFF when you finish cooking. How to Select Flame SizeFor safe handling of cookware, never let the flamesextend up the sides of the cookware.Watch the flame, not the knob, as youreduce heat. The flame size on a gasburner should match the cookware youare using.Any flame larger than the bottom of thecookware is wasted and only serves to heatthe handle.Wok This WayWe recommend that you use a flat-bottomed wok, available at your local retail stores, or use the WokHolder accessory with traditional round bottomed woks. The Wok Holder accessory, model JXWK, can beordered from your appliance dealer. The Wok Holder fits on top of the rangegrate to provide support and proper aircirculation for traditional round bottomwoks only. Do not use flat bottomed wokswith the Wok Holder.Do not use a wok on any other supportring. Placing the ring over the burnergrate may cause the burner to workimproperly, resulting in carbonmonoxide levels above allowable currentstandards. This could be dangerous toyour health. Do not try to use such wokswithout the ring unless you are using theWok Holder. You could be seriouslyburned if the wok tipped over.Use a flat-bottomed wok.CookwareAluminum: Medium-weight cookware isrecommended because it heats quicklyand evenly. Most foods brown evenly inan aluminum skillet. Use saucepans withtight fitting lids when cooking withminimum amounts of water.Enamelware: Under some conditions, the enamel of some cookware may melt.Follow cookware manufacturer’srecommendations for cooking methods.Glass: There are two types of glass cookware:those for oven use only and those for top-of-range cooking (saucepans, coffee andtea pots). Glass conducts heat very slowly.Cast Iron: If heated slowly, most skilletswill give satisfactory results.Heatproof Glass Ceramic: Can be used foreither surface or oven cooking. It conductsheat very slowly and cools very slowly. Checkcookware manufacturer’s directions to besure it can be used on gas ranges.Stainless Steel: This metal alone has poorheating properties and is usually combinedwith copper, aluminum or other metals forimproved heat distribution. Combinationmetal skillets usually work satisfactorily ifthey are used with medium heat as themanufacturer recommends. 9
