GNS 430 Pilot’s Guide and Reference 11-1SECTION 11TERRAINSECTION 11: TERRAIN INTERFACE11.1 INTRODUCTIONOverviewGarmin TERRAIN is a non-TSO-C151b-certifiedterrain awareness system incorporated into GNS 430units to increase situational awareness, and aid inreducing controlled flight into terrain (CFIT). TERRAINfunctionality is a standard feature found in GNS 430 unitswith main software version 5.01 or above, along withappropriate hardware upgrades.NOTE: Not all GNS 430 units are equipped withor configured for TERRAIN. See the 400 SeriesInstallation Manual (190-00140-02) for TERRAINconfiguration information.Operating CriteriaThe Garmin TERRAIN system requires the followingto operate properly:• The system must have a valid 3D GPS positionsolution• The system must have valid terrain and obstacledatabasesAdvisory OnlyThe TERRAIN function displays altitudes of terrainand obstructions relative to the aircraft’s altitude and areadvisory in nature only. Individual obstructions may beshown if available in the database. Not all obstructions maybe available in the database and data may be inaccurate—do not maneuver or navigate to avoid obstacles usingthis information. Terrain information is based on terrainelevation data contained in a database, which may containinaccuracies. Terrain information should be used as anaid to visual acquisition—do not use terrain informationto navigate or maneuver to avoid terrain.
