H3C SR6608/6604 Routers Installation Manual Chapter 6 Starting and Configuring the Router6-8Note:If the configuration file contains the information of an interface card that is not currentlyin position, a message similar as shown below appears when the router is booted:“Card in slot <3> was removed and configuration on this card is not activated..”.6.4 Configuration FundamentalsIn general, the configuration steps are as follows:1) Before configuring the router, you should summarize the networking requirements, including the networking objective, role of the router in the network, division ofsubnets, WAN type and transmission medium, network security policy andnetwork reliability.2) Based on the above requirements, draw a clear, complete network diagram.3) Configure the WAN interface of the router. Configure the operating parameters(for example, the operating mode, baud rate and synchronous clock in case of aserial interface) of the interface according to the transmission medium of the WAN.4) Configure the IP addresses of all the interfaces on the router according to thedivision of the subnets.5) Configure routes. If it is necessary to enable a dynamic routing protocol, you needto configure related operating parameters of the protocol.6) Perform special security configuration for the router if necessary.7) Perform reliability configuration for the router if necessary. For the configuration details of the protocols or functions of the router, refer to H3CSR66 Series Routers User Manual.6.5 Command Line Interface6.5.1 Features of the Command Line InterfaceThe command line interface (CLI) of the device provides a number of configurationcommands, which enable you to configure and manage the router. The CLI provides the following functions:z Allows you to perform local configuration through the console port.z Allows you to perform the local or remote configuration and directly log in to andmanage other routers by using the telnet command.z Provides online help, which is available by entering “?”.z Provides network diagnostic tools, such as Tracert and Ping, for quick diagnosis ofnetwork connectivity.z Provides all kinds of detailed debugging information to help diagnose networkfaults.
