28 OPERATIONOperationthat some future digital sources may not be com-patible with the AVR 210.3. Note that not all digitally encoded programscontain full 5.1-channel audio. Consult the pro-gram guide that accompanies the DVD or laserdisc to determine which type of audio has beenrecorded on the disc. The AVR 210 will auto-matically sense the type of digital surroundencoding used and adjust to accommodate it.4. When a digital source is playing, you may notbe able to select some of the analog surroundmodes such as Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby 3, Stereo,Hall, Theater or Logic 7.5. When a Dolby Digital or DTS source is play-ing, it is not possible to make an analog record-ing using the Tape ™ and Video 1 or Video2 Record Outputs ∞cfj. However, thedigital signals will be passed through to theDigital Audio Outputs ‚.PCM Audio PlaybackPCM (Pulse Code Modulation) is the non-compressed digital audio system used forcompact discs and laser discs. The digital circuitsin the AVR 210 are capable of high-qualitydigital-to-analog decoding, and they may beconnected directly to the digital audio outputof your CD or LD player.Connections may be made to either the rearpanel Optical or Coaxial inputs hi or thefront panel Digital Inputs #$.To listen to a PCM digital source, first select theinput for the desired source (e.g., CD). Next pressthe Digital Select button Úp and then usethe ⁄ / ¤ buttons mq on the remote, or theSelector buttons 5 on the front panel, untilthe desired choice appears in the MainInformation Display X.When a PCM source is playing, the PCM indi-cator A will light. During PCM playback youmay select any surround mode except DolbyDigital or DTS.Playback from PCM sources may also benefitfrom the Logic 7 Mode. When playing back asurround-encoded PCM source, such as an LDor surround-encoded CD, use the Logic 7 C orCinema mode. When playing true stereorecordings, use the Logic 7 M or Music modefor a wider soundstage and increased rear-channel ambience.MP3 Audio PlaybackThe AVR 210 is one of the first A/V receivers toprovide on-board decoding for the MP3 audioformat used by computers and portable audiodevices. In addition, some new CD players arecapable of playing back optical discs that arerecorded with MP3, rather than standard CDaudio information. By offering MP3 decoding, the AVR 210 is able to deliver more preciseconversion of the digital signals to an analogoutput, along with the benefits of listening tothe MP3 audio through the AVR 210’s high-current amplifier and the speakers from yoursurround system, rather than the smallerspeakers and low-powered amplifiers typicallyused with computers. To take advantage of the AVR 210’s MP3 capa-bilities, simply connect the PCM output of acomputer’s sound card or the PCM output of aportable digital audio device to either the rearpanel Digital Inputs hi or the front panelDigital Inputs #$. As soon as the digitalsignal is available, the MP3 BitstreamIndicator A will light, and the audio willbegin playing.NOTES:• The AVR 210 is only capable of playing sig-nals in the MP3 (MPEG 1/Layer 3) format. Itis not compatible with other computer audiocodecs.• The digital audio input signal may be eitheroptical or coaxial, but the signal must be inthe PCM format. Direct connection of USB orserial data outputs is not possible, eventhough the signals are in the MP3 format. Ifyou have any questions about the data out-put format from your computer or a soundcard, check with the device’s owner’s manualor contact the manufacturer’s technical sup-port area.Tuner OperationThe AVR 210’s tuner is capable of tuning AM,FM and FM Stereo broadcast stations. Stationsmay be tuned manually, or they may be storedas favorite station presets and recalled from a30-position memory.Station Selection1. Press the AM/FM Tuner Select button gon the remote to select the tuner as an input. The tuner may be selected from the front panelby either pressing the Input Source Selector! until the tuner is active or by pressing theTuner Band Selector 9 at any time.2. Press the AM/FM Tuner Select button gor Tuner Band Selector 9 again to switchbetween AM and FM so that the desiredfrequency band is selected.3. Press the FM Mode button @ s to selectmanual or automatic tuning. When the AUTO indicator W is illuminated inthe Main Information Display X the tunerwill stop only at those stations that have astrong enough signal to be received withacceptable quality. When the AUTO indicator W is not illumi-nated, the tuner is in a manual mode andwill stop at each frequency increment in theselected band.4. To select stations, press the TuningSelector button 8u. When the AUTOindicator W is illuminated, press the buttonfor two seconds and then release to cause thetuner to search for the next highest- or lowest-frequency station that has an acceptable signal. When tuning FM stations in the Auto mode, thetuner will select only stereo stations. To tune tothe next station, press the button again. If theSTEREO indicator U is not illuminated, tapthe Tuning Selector button 8u toadvance one frequency increment at a time, orpress and hold it to locate a specific station. When the TUNED indicator V lights, thestation is properly tuned and should be heardwith clarity.5. Stations may also be tuned directly by press-ing the Direct button t, and then pressingthe Numeric Keys r that correspond to thestation’s frequency. The desired station willautomatically be tuned. If you press an incor-rect button while entering a direct frequency, press the Clear button to start over.NOTE: When the FM reception of a station isweak, audio quality will be increased byswitching to Mono mode by pressing theFM Mode button @ s until theSTEREO indicator U goes out.Preset TuningUsing the remote, up to 30 stations may bestored in the AVR 210’s memory for easy recallusing the front panel controls or the remote. To enter a station into the memory, first tunethe station using the steps outlined above.Then:28
