31 ADVANCED FEATURESAdvanced FeaturesThe AVR 210 is equipped with a number ofadvanced features that add extra flexibility tothe unit’s operation. While it is not necessaryto use these features to operate the unit, theyprovide additional options that you may wishto use.Display BrightnessThe AVR 210’s Main Information DisplayÛ is set at a default brightness level that issufficient for viewing in a normally lit room.However, in some home-theater installations,you may wish to occasionally lower the bright-ness of the display, or turn it off completely.To change the display brightness setting for aspecific listening session, you will need to makean adjustment in the ADVANCEDSELECT menu. To start the adjustment,press the OSD button v to bring theMASTER MENU to the screen. Press the ¤button q six times, until the on-screen › cur-sor is next to the ADVANCED line. Press theSet button o to enter the ADVANCEDSELECT menu (Figure 9).Figure 9To change the brightness setting, at theADVANCED SELECT menu, make cer-tain that the on-screen › cursor is next to theVFD line, and press the › button untilthe desired brightness level is highlighted in thevideo display. When FULL is highlighted, thedisplay is at its normal brightness. WhenHALF is highlighted, the display is at half thenormal brightness level. When OFF is high-lighted, all of the indicators in the MainInformation Display Û will go dark. Note,however, that the green LEDs for the InputIndicators and the Surround ModeIndicators ˜, as well as for the PowerIndicator 3, will always remain lit to remindyou that the unit is turned on.The display brightness may also be changed bypressing and holding the Set button Ô on thefront for three seconds until the message in theMain Information Display X reads VFDFULL. Within five seconds, press the frontpanel Selector buttons 5 until the desiredbrightness display level is shown. At that point,press the Set button Ô again to enter thesetting.Once the desired brightness level is selected, itwill remain in effect until it is changed again oruntil the unit is turned off.If you wish to make other adjustments, pressthe ⁄/¤ buttons mq until the on-screen› cursor is next to the desired setting or theRETURN TO MENU line and press the Setbutton o. If you have no other adjustmentsto make, press the OSD button v to exit themenu system.Turn On Volume LevelAs is the case with most audio/video receivers,when the AVR 210 is turned on, it will alwaysreturn to the volume setting in effect when theunit was turned off. However, you may prefer toalways have the AVR 210 turn on at a specificsetting, regardless of what was last in usewhen the unit was turned off. To change thedefault condition so that the same volume levelis always used at turn-on, you will need tomake an adjustment in the ADVANCEDSELECT menu. To start the adjustment,press the OSD button v to bring theMASTER MENU (Figure 1) to the screen.Press the ¤ button q six times, until the on-screen › cursor is next to the ADVANCEDline. Press the Set button o to enter theADVANCED SELECT menu (Figure 9).At the ADVANCED SELECT menu makecertain that the on-screen › cursor is next tothe VOLUME DEFAULT line by pressingthe ⁄/¤ buttons mq as needed. Next,press the › button so that the word ONis highlighted in the video display. Next, pressthe ¤ button q once so that the on-screen› cursor is next to the DEFAULT VOLSET line. To set the desired turn-on volume,press the ‹/› buttons n until thedesired volume level is shown on theDEFAULT VOL SET line. Note that thissetting may NOT be made with the regular vol-ume controls.NOTE: Since the setting for the turn-on volumecannot be heard while the setting is beingmade, you may wish to determine the settingbefore making the adjustment. To do this, listento any source and adjust the volume to thedesired level using the regular volume controlsÓ . When the desired volume level to beused at turn-on is reached, make a note of thesetting as it appears in the lower third of thevideo screen or in the Main InformationDisplay X. (A typical volume level will appearas a negative number such as –25dB.) Whenmaking the adjustment, use the ‹/› buttonsn to enter this setting.Unlike some of the other adjustments in thismenu, the turn-on volume default will remain ineffect until it is changed or turned off in thismenu, even when the unit is turned off.If you wish to make other adjustments, pressthe ⁄/¤ buttons mq until the on-screen› cursor is next to the desired setting or theRETURN TO MENU line and press the Setbutton o. If you have no other adjustmentsto make, press the OSD button v to exit themenu system.Semi-OSD SettingsThe semi-OSD system places one line messagesat the lower third of the video display screenwhenever the Volume, Input Source, Surroundmode or tuner frequency of any of the configu-ration settings are changed. The semi-OSD sys-tem is helpful in that enables you to have feed-back on any control changes or remote com-mands using the video display when it is diffi-cult to view the front panel displays. However,you may occasionally prefer to turn these dis-plays off for a particular listening session. Youmay also want to adjust the length of time thedisplays remain on the screen. Both of thoseoptions are possible with the AVR 210.To turn off the semi-OSD system, you will needto make an adjustment in the ADVANCEDSELECT menu (Figure 9). To start theadjustment, press the OSD button v to bringthe MASTER MENU to the screen. Pressthe ¤ button q six times, until the on-screen¤ cursor is next to the ADVANCED line.Press the Set button o to enter theADVANCED SELECT menu.At the ADVANCED SELECT menu,make certain that the on-screen › cursor isnext to the SEMI OSD DEFAULT line bypressing the ⁄/¤ buttons mq as needed.Next, press the › button so that the wordOFF is highlighted in the video display.Note that this setting is temporary and willremain active only until it is changed or untilthe AVR 210 is turned off.
