22 22CONNECTIONSS-video, or “separate” video, transmits the chrominance and luminancecomponents using separate wires contained within a single cable. The plug on an S-video cable contains four metal pins, plus a plasticguide pin. Be careful to line up the plug correctly when you insert it intothe jack on the receiver, source or video display. See Figure 11.Figure 11 – S-VideoComponent video separates the video signal into three components –one luminance (“Y”) and two sub-sampled color signals (“Pb” and “Pr”) –that are transmitted using three separate cables. The “Y” cable is color-coded green, the “Pb” cable is colored blue and the “Pr” cable iscolored red. See Figure 12.Figure 12 – Component VideoIf it’s available on your video display, HDMI is recommended as the bestquality connection, followed by component video, S-video and thencomposite video.NOTES:• Due to copy-protection restrictions, there is no output at theComponent Video Monitor Outputs for copy-protected sources.• High-resolution 1080i and 1080p video signals are not avail-able at the HDMI Output, but 1080i signals are passedthrough, as is, to the Component Video Outputs. If yoursource outputs analog high-resolution video, either use theComponent Video Outputs, change the output resolution ofyour source device to 720p, or connect your source’scomponent video outputs directly to your video display.• Due to the design of some video displays, analog 480p or720p component video source signals may produce artifactswhen used with the AVR’s analog video outputs (composite,S-video or component video). If this occurs, try changing theVideo Mode setting in the INPUT SETUP menu, or connectingthe source device’s video output directly to your video display. However, for best results, we recommend that you considerupgrading to an HDMI-capable video display.AntennasThe AVR 350 uses separate terminals for the included FM and AMantennas that provide proper reception for the tuner. The FM antenna uses a 75-ohm F-connector. See Figure 13.Figure 13 – FM AntennaThe AM loop antenna needs to be assembled. Then connect the twoleads to the screw terminals on the receiver. See Figure 14.Figure 14 – AM AntennaTo enjoy XM satellite radio, purchase an XM antenna module designedfor use with XM Ready devices and a subscription to the XM service.Harman Kardon recommends the XM Mini Tuner and Home DockBundle, available at www.xmradio.com. The older Connect and Playmodule is also compatible with the AVR 350, but it may no longer beavailable in your area.An XM Ready-compatible module uses the special connector on theAVR 350’s rear panel that allows you to use the AVR’s tuner, includingits 40 preset station locations and remote control. Although you mayuse a module with standard audio connections, which may be indicatedfor “car and home use,” you will not be able to enjoy the AVR 350’sease of control.RS-232 Serial PortThe RS-232 serial port on the AVR 350 is used only for data. IfHarman Kardon releases a software upgrade for the receiver’s operatingsystem at some time in the future, the upgrade may be downloadedto the AVR using this port. Complete instructions will be provided atthat time.Componentvideo cableS-video cable
