When the headphoneplug is removed, the audio feed to the speakers willbe restored.Surround Mode SelectionOne of the most important features of the DPR 1001is its ability to reproduce a full multichannel surroundsound field from digital sources, analog matrix surround-encoded programs and standard stereo programs.Selection of a surround mode is based on personal taste,as well as the type of program source material beingused. For example, motion pictures or TV programs bear-ing the logo of one of the major surround-encodingprocesses, such as Dolby Surround or DTS Stereo, maybe played in the Dolby Digital, Surround EX,™ DolbyPro Logic II – Movie, DTS Neo:6 or Logic 7 surroundmodes, depending on the source material.NOTE: Once a program has been encoded with matrixsurround information, it retains the surround informationas long as the program is broadcast in stereo. Thus, movies with surround sound may be decoded via any ofthe analog surround modes such as Dolby Pro Logic II –Movie, Logic 7 Cinema or DTS Neo:6 Cinema, whenthey are broadcast via conventional TV stations, cable,pay-TV and satellite transmission. In addition, a growingnumber of programs are produced with Dolby Surroundencoding. You may view a list of these programs at theDolby Laboratories Web site at www.dolby.com.Even when a program is not listed as carrying inten-tional surround information, you may find that theDolby Pro Logic II, Logic 7 Enhance (available only inthe 5.1 configuration), DTS Neo:6, VMAx, Hall orTheater modes may deliver enveloping surround pre-sentations through the use of the natural informationpresent in all stereo recordings. However, for stereo, butnot surround programs, we suggest that you experimentwith the other modes.Surround modes may be selected using either the frontpanel controls or the remote. To select a surroundmode from the front panel, first press the SurroundMode Selector 3. This will cycle through the avail-able surround mode groupings.Once the desired surround mode group name appears, press the Surround Select Button 4 to cyclethrough the choices that are available within that modegroup. The choices will vary based on the speaker con-figuration and input source. Some modes may be usedonly when seven speaker channels are available (e.g.,Dolby Digital EX, Logic 7/7.1 and DTS-ES 6.1), whileothers (Dolby Digital, Logic 7/5.1 and DTS) are onlyavailable when five speaker channels are configured. To select a surround mode using the remote control, first determine which overall surround group the modeis in. The groupings are the same as when changingmodes using the front panel controls. For example, toselect Dolby Pro Logic II – Music you will need to pressthe Dolby Surround Mode Select Button or toselect VMAx you will use the DSP Surround ModeSelector g. Using the button that matches the sur-round group, press the Dolby Surround Mode SelectButton , DTS Digital Mode Select Button ,Logic 7 Mode Select Button h, DTS Neo:6Mode Select Button , DSP Surround ModeSelector g or Stereo Mode Select Button .Depending on the current speaker configuration (5.1 or6.1/7.1), each subsequent press of the button will dis-play the modes available in that grouping. When thedesired mode name appears in the on-screen displayand Lower Display Line B, simply wait five secondsfor the setting to be entered into memory. When theon-screen display times out, the unit has returned tonormal operation, and the mode name will remain in theLower Display Line B.As the surround modes change, an amber LED will lightnext to the current mode in the Surround ModeIndicators * list on the front panel. The Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1, DTS-ES Matrix andDTS-ES Discrete modes may only be selected when adigital input is in use. In addition, when a digital sourceis present, the DPR 1001 will automatically select andswitch to the correct mode, regardless of the mode thathas been previously selected. For more information onselecting digital sources, see the following section. To listen to a program in traditional two-channel stereo, using the front left and front right speakers only (plus thesubwoofer, if installed and configured), press the StereoMode Select Button until SURR OFFappears in the Lower Display Line B.Digital Audio PlaybackDigital audio is a major advancement over analog sur-round processing systems such as Dolby Pro Logic. Itdelivers five discrete channels: left front, center, right front, left surround and right surround. Each channel reproducesfull frequency range (20Hz to 20kHz) and offers dramati-cally improved dynamic range and signal-to-noise ratios. In addition, digital systems have the capability to deliver anadditional channel that is specifically devoted to low-fre-quency information. This is the “.1” channel referred towhen you see these systems described as “5.1,” “6.1” or“7.1”. The bass channel is separate from the other chan-nels, but since it is intentionally bandwidth-limited, sounddesigners have given it that unique designation.Dolby DigitalDolby Digital is a standard part of DVD, and is available onspecially encoded LD discs and satellite broadcasts and itis a part of the high-definition television (HDTV) system.Dolby Digital bitstreams may be encoded in a variety ofchannel configurations, ranging from traditional two-channelstereo to the latest Dolby Digital Surround EX technology.Once the DPR 1001’s processor recognizes the DolbyDigital bitstream, a variety of surround modes may beapplied, as indicated in the previous section.39394041424232323232323333(Continued on p. 27) |
